Olga Carolinacordova's Story

Life After high school: '63, attended Diablo Valley College in Concord, CA; '67, Bachelors from NAU, Minor in Spanish/Maj. in U.S.History; have been a Middle & High School teacher & counselor; '78, Masters in Counseling from Cal-State Fullerton; 30 yrs. in Orange County, CA, last 24 as a H. S. Counselor; '83, 1st marriage to a Uruguyan Spaniard (Gerald), who loves to gourmet cook, & works as a local big-rigger; have many hobbies & interests; and with luck & prayer, in good health. My mother passed on October 18, 2001, and I miss her very much, and therefore not the happiest person in the world. She was my inspiration and my best friend...she remains with me in my heart. Other members of my family still live in Douglas, & we visit often, spending major holidays there. I HAVE RETIRED... June 17, THIRTY-FIVE years in education! We are relocating to Southern Arizona,(we purchased our country home in May, 2002), where we plan to continue working after October.(UPDATED 9/30/02) WHAT IS THE LATEST WITH ME? Well, I now live in southern AZ, about 15 miles north of the border..I travel to Douglas every morning, where I work as a teacher/program coordinator for a non-profit organization. I enjoy my work very much. I find it extremely rewarding in working with and servicing adults who want to get ahead. I've been working for this organization since Nov. of 2003. It has provided the opportunity to launch a program and see it succeed. You Know, I was gone for 40 years from Douglas, never thought I would walk down those streets again as I do...it's very strange sometimes...it takes me back in time! It's like so much has changed and yet it still remains the same, only that I'm older and wiser! Next time I write I hope to tell you that I've been doing some artwork. I've been doing some gardening and birdwatching instead. I also kept my mom's house...my husband and I tend to spend as much time as we can there. Overall, although I still miss my mother so much, I feel very blessed at this time. Only thing is, there are sooo many things to do and yet it seems there just isn't enough time. Why do I write my bio? I was always so shy and reserved, that I've made it a point to share more of myself...why be soooo private? I also like to know about people in general for all the right reasons. I would rather read about people from my hometown than read about Hollywood celebrities...My hometown is more important..I know, some may differ with me but that's who I am. Douglas has many celebrities...the struggle to make ends meet and get ahead, I consider that a great challenge that deserves some limelight. There's so much to be said for "My Hometown!" (UPDATED 6/1/05) Hello again....if your reading this, it's because you also like to know about people. Maybe I should write my life story here...The question is what is new with me since I last shared a part of my doings? I still live in the same place, I'm 66 years old, and have a wonderful life! I travel to Douglas 4 times a week. I have my own business now. A year ago I was still tea...Expand for more
ching for Catholic Community Services but was let-go because they no longer could support the program I worked with. At the time I had approximately 28 students, Ged and ESL, (we all cried), my students offered to pay me if I stayed, and I did. So that's how my escuelita was born. I teach GED, ESL, and Citizenship. My business name: Adelante Adult Learner Services. I work with small groups, mostly adults, although I did tutor some kindergarten children this summer. I love what I do. Also, for the last 2 years I have been involved with a number of other Douglas residents in forming a fund. We were able to raise enough to get a match from the Cochise Community Foundation and now we have a fund. This fund is called Douglas Area Community Fund. It proposes to give back to the community in grants which we plan to start doing in January of 2009. There are nine of us on the board. 12/22/08 updated to be continued. AUGUST 29, 2012, UPDATE: First, I want to thank all those that have found an interest in reading my story, I apologize if I have not returned a thank you....my life journey has taken me in many other directions. In December of 2009, I completed FORTY-ONE YEARS IN EDUCATION, I closed my "little school" in Douglas and retired for good so I think. I stay really involved, doing all the things I've always wanted to do. I have been working at home, organizing tons of photos I have gathered, taken, inherited, etc. for the past 50 years. I also photograph hummers, butterflies, and anything else that gets in front of my camera. I love my minolta, but in Oct., 2010, I finally got a digital. Last December, I finally cleared our 3-car garage, had a huge garage sale, stuff that I had been "keeping" for years, made my husband very happy! I try to give an hour a day to nature, an hour to facebook, an hour to sewing, an hour to cooking, an hour to the internet, I love to surf and learn new things, an hour to some reading...and my husband takes much of my time...he is very special to me. My husband Gerald, is still working, so we are sort of tied down, and don't travel much. When we travel, we go to Buenos Aires, Argentina, his family lives there, or we visit Palm Springs, my brother Luciano, lives there. I am also involved with the Douglas Area Community Fund, the fund that a group of us put together to help the community. We are now giving out grants, small but very helpful, every year that get a bit larger. I have also been involved in reading grants for the Cochise Community Foundation. Sad news: I lost my younger brother, Alfonso Ramirez, (Neny), "Papago," He passed March 12, 2012. He was 63, he just couldn't kick the alcohol habit, and after 40 years of alcohol abuse, it took its toll. I'm still in mourning and will always miss him. On a lighter note, I am looking forwards to our 50-year re-union, October 12-14, hope we have a good turnout. Thanks for reading my story, a very short story of my journey....Now how about writing a little something about you, remember, we are all unique and no 2 stories are alike....
