Olin's Story

Life Hi everyone! I'm not really sure where to begin... I guess graduation would be the place. I kicked around after graduation, hanging out with my girlfriend Jane Distola, my friends David Wise, Jim Beatty, Phillip & John Mullins, & working at the old Winn Dixie south of 520 on south Courtney in Merritt Island. Jane & I kinda petered out over the summer so I signed up for delayed enlistment into the Air Force, entering in Jan. of 82. As that my interests were leaning towards law enforcement, I became an A.F. Security Policeman and during my six years I was stationed in Guam, Charleston S.C. & Ogden UT. I made some incredible friendships in those years, as well as losing some that in my youth & stupidity, I let slip away. The hindsight that the onset of middle age brings makes me regret that I lost touch with all of them. I hope to correct some of those mistakes through this site. Anyhow I married twice in those years, first to Linda McGillicuddy in 83 (which didn't last long, we were too young,( & Linda I hope your doing well). then again in 85 to Vickie Shaira who I met while stationed in Charleston. I became a father to Jennifer (now 25), and together we had Scherri Kay (now 22), and Laura Jean (21). Unfortunately, differences caused us to divorce in 88 (we're good friends now). I got out of the Air Force soon thereafter and returned to Merritt Island. I putzed around for a year, ending up as a state correctional officer working at Brevard C.I. for some 8 1/2 years. During this time I met & married Joyce Larsh and together we had Steven Andrew in 94. Joyce passed away in 96 ( I have not remarried). My daughter Scherri came to live with me shortly after Joyce passed & Laura came to me a year later. I went to work for an international Security corporation in 98 as a shift supervisor and worked sites to include Sea Ray Boats & Cape Canaveral A.F. Station launch complexes 36 & 41. In Dec. of 2004 My mother, Caroline Fulk, passed away. She was like a surrogate mother to my kids, and her loss affected them deeply. Because of the slow degradation of the community where I'd grown up, and the affect it was having on my kids, I ended up relocating to Boise Idaho, a much more family friendly place to live. We lived with my ex-in laws in Kuna for the first year (it's not as awkward as it sounds, we're all great friends) then moved into Boise proper. All the girls are grown and married now and have made me a Grandpa (GAWD!) Steven & I are still a couple of Florida boys at heart and the winters here will give religion to the thin blooded, but we're doing well, and have grown to love our new home. I work as the Operations Manager for SarahCare of Boise, an adult day care. Working with the elderly has given me a sense of job satisfaction I've never known before. The abruptness of our relocation caused us to lose contact with some people including some of my own family (you had other things to do besides concern yourselves with us, you know who you are, sorry), so I hope that this bio is a first step towards healing some wounds as well as reestablishing some old friendships! Military Hi again... I entered the United States Air Force on the 28 Jan 82 at Lackland AFB TX. owing to the fact that I had 3 years of JROTC at Merritt Island high, I was only in basic for 19 training days. From there I went to the Security Police Academy, also loc...Expand for more
ated at Lackland, after which I got tagged for AZR (machine gunner) school and Air Base Ground Defense training, both located at Camp Bullis, TX. By this time we all had our orders, and much to my consternation I discovered that I had originally had orders to Athens, Greece but because of a drug bust my orders got "redlined" and I was going to Guam. PACAF had the reputation for being the "party command", and damned if I wasn't going to the only SAC base in the whole pacific theater! (for you non - initiates, Strategic Air Command was the most uptight command in the AF. Nukes, STAN-EVAL, PRP, etc). I was assigned to the 43rd Security Police Squadron. Anyways, it turned out not to be so bad. I spent 15 months "humping" B-52s. On my off duty time I enjoyed what recreation the island had to offer, being a proper southern gentleman, I won't go into details except to say that I have fond memories of the Guam Paradise Inn in Aganya heights (Mama-san treated me nicely), and the Hilton tree bar. Those Japanese girls were wonderful, the house bands were not. My next assignment was Charleston AFB, South Carolina, (Military Airlift Command) which turned out to be thee of the happiest years of my life I was assigned to the 437th SPS, "B" Flight Security. Charleston was a blast, and my flight mates & I were like brothers. Tom Olsen, Dave Zaleski, Mark (sugar D) Davis, Wess Pennington, Leo MacHugh, Noah Click, Steve Desiki, Jeff Samuels, Don Joy, all of us got into all sorts of trouble together, & enjoyed every minute of it. I remember one time we were partying with the 82nd Airborne & we all got kicked out of the NCO club, one of us (you know who you are) passed out & we were all trying to carry him up the fire escape to the barracks so we could put him to bed. We were all really drunk, & we kept dropping him. He'd go thump thump thump down the stairs, & we'd go back down & try again. It took six or seven tries, but we finally got him into his rack. The next day, he was sore as hell, & when he asked what happened, we told him that he had gotten jumped at the club, & that we all Jumped in and saved him. He never figured it out! My duties included in-flight security missions, which allowed me to travel all over the world. Still tasked with ABGD, I was also assigned to the mobility team, so I spent a lot of time in the field, which we all complained about but I really enjoyed. Going to Volant Scorpion (where I saw snow for the first time), as well as local deployments. Our Initial mobility commander was Capt. Sweeney then, Capt Roach who's reputation terrified us, but turned out to be as much of a practical joker and all around good guy as we were ( he was particularly gifted with trip flares as I recall). Due to marital problems I swapped to Hill AFB, UT, in 96. I was assigned to the 2849th SPS (Air Force Logistics Command). I can't say anything good about that assignment except that I had some good friends there to include Kevin (Quaalude) Boyd, Charlie Nester & Bill McGovern. I had been struggling with my weight, and it was a battle I ended up losing (still am). I was discharged in Oct of 88. Though I have some regrets, it was, on the whole, a great experience and I am proud to have served my country, particularly with such good people. I hope that some day I can make contact with them again and share a few laughs over good times remembered.
