Orlow Kent's Story
Life
Lived in St. Louis Park till 1971, then moved into Mpls, MN. Friends with Nancy Gold, George Pierce, Steve Cousins, Tim Becker, and Tim Wright, during those early days. Never knew a lot of people well then.
Attended Cedar Manor for Elementary School, Westwood Junior High for 7th grade, then, went to private school at St. James for two years (8th & 9th grade), returned to St. Louis Park High School for half a year. Quit school, moved into Mpls., ended up addicted to drugs and alcohol, hitched-hiked to CA with my friend Bob Lovelace in 1972. Returned in the Spring of 1973 and returned the drug culture and ended up addicted to heroin and alcohol.
In 1974 became a Christian, entered drug rehabilitation in Teen Challenge in Mpls., summer of 1974, went to PA., finished rehab program, moved to Brockton, MA to work on staff for Teen Challenge. Worked there three years, obtained a G.E.D., married in 1977, left Teen Challenge to return to regular work and attend college full-time.
Fall of 1977, started Massasoit Community College in Brockton, MA,, had a 3.75 GPA, Fall of 1979 accepted and transferred to Amherst College in Amherst, MA., graduated 1983. Did some part-time jobs in photo retail, started working as a photojournalist for the Daily Hampshire Gazette/Amherst Bulletin full-time while freelancing for the Boston Globe, New York Times, and Associated Press, and others.
Still working as a freelance Photojournalist and an Interactive Multimedia Designer. Was awarded two Massachusetts Arts Lottery grants for one-man shows for work on the Amherst area in B&W and manipulated Polaroids, had a one-man show at Amherst College in 1990 titled "Venus Descending". Did a show in Mpls. in 2005 at Splee Gallery in Minneapolis, MN. relating to manipulated Polaroids. Current activities and full resume at 3w's .alleywayz dot com.
Divorced in 1991 after 15 years, no children. Remarried in 1993, had two boys Dylan, born 5/14/1993, and Declan, born 2/11/95, separated in Fall 1994,
Began graduate school at Boston University in Fall of 1994 for Photojournalism and Interactive Multimedia. Lived in Hadley, MA, Bartended weekends in Springfield, MA, cared for my two sons part-time three days a week, traveled in and out of Boston four days a week (over 100 miles one way), and was a graduate teaching assistant...Expand for more
for Prof, John Robaton, working in the BU darkroom teaching and assisting undergraduate students in the art of darkroom work. Fall of 1995, two courses short of an MA degree in Photojournalism, Economy takes a noise dive (Reagan's trickle down theory takes affect), can't return to BU, No degree, start working a lot of freelance and odd jobs,
Winter of 1997, started work as teacher for Computer Learning Center in Springfield, MA, living in Northampton, doing odd-jobs as freelancer, and spending time with my sons. Fall of 1997, met a woman from Trondheim, Norway online (Match.com), we get along, she comes to the States for a visit, she returns to Norway, packed her stuff, and returns 4 months later, we're married in the Summer of 1998 (we're doing great, sons think the world or her, they loved to bake and cook together.)
Fall of 1998 land job at the Springfield Police Dept. in Springfield, MA (No way...lol.), hired as a Web Designer, PR Photographer, and Interactive Media Projects designer. Start working in the Forensic Video field as I'm the only one that knows how to capture, edit, and convert various video formats for the SPD, (Still freelancing as a Photojournalist.)
Oldest son, Dylan, went to the Air Force on 1/27/14, youngest went to the Culinary Institute of America. They are wonderful adventure seekers. I've never had so much fun and joy. They are both doing well.
Retired from the SPD in 2017 and have been doing Photojournalist freelance jobs and substitute teaching with the Springfield School Dept. since.

Favorite Pastimes: Skiing, Golf, Squash, Racquetball, Swimming, Exercise, Playing with my sons and loving my wife.
