Orvell's Story

To all my classmates of P.S. 22, Lincoln HS and Dickinson HS. It has been 52 years since we last saw one another and I sincerely hope you are all well. I remember some of you and the good times we had learning what was necessary to prepare us for life. I did meet up with Alfred Lofton while serving in the US Navy. I was stationed in Morroco, North Africa and sitting in my barracks when I saw this Marine coming towards me. I knew right off it was Alfred. This was back in 1965 and since then I have not seen anyone. Where are all of you? After High School I enlisted into the Navy and after boot camp was immediately sent to Morroco for 18 months and then onto Norfolk, Virginia for duty on the USS Orion AS-18. A submarine tender. After being honorably discharged in October of 1967 I went home to my family in Jersey City. I was employed by Pacific Intermountain Express Trucking and worked for G&G Auto Service on Summit Ave as a mechanic. From there I was hired by the Jersey City Fire Dept. in July 1972 and retired in 2000 with the rank of Captain. While employed at G&G Auto Service in 1970 I met my soul mate Christine Sypek and tied the knot in June of 1974 and we are still married to this day. We raised two fine young men who are now both in uniform. the oldest is a Police Officer in New York and our other son is a US Marine at school in California. Well, that is about all my entire life wrapped up into two paragraphs at this point in time. I sincerely hope that if you get a chance to read this, you would stop by and say hello. God bless and best wishes always! Update: April 3, 2012 Still here and waiting to hear from some of my classmates from PS 22, Lincoln and Dickinson. A few have responded and it was great to know some are still around to say hello. I have been active in the Patriot Guard Riders for the last year now. For those of you who aren't familiar with the PGR, we're an organization of veterans and non-vets who escort and stand a flag line for our fallen brothers and sisters who served in the Armed Forces. Most of us are motorcycle riders and are always welcoming newcomers. If you are interested you can see their webpage at PGR.com. Paying our respects to the families and friends of those who have gone on before us is the least we can do to honor the loss of their loved one. God bless and hope all is well with each of you. Your Classmate, Orvell Froloff P.S. Time is passing us by so don't hesitate to get on board. You may be surprised by who has been looking for you. Saddling up on a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 and cruising the highways is probably the most exhilarating experience one could have. I only wish it was a Harley Davidson Road King! John Wayne and Elvis Presley my two heroes from the past. The Duke and the Pelvis! The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Billy McChrystal. We were good friends in Lafayette Gardens in Jersey City, NJ. Stay young and enjoy life and be good to everyone you encounter. You never know when you're talking to an angel of God. If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to a Children's Orphanage, then spend the rest on my family, traveling and sharing my good fortune with those I love. My best friend would tell you I'm loyal, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as outgoing and friendly. All I wear is a pair of wranglers and a cotton shirt. Sneakers or boots and never go anywhere without my baseball cap! No, it's not fashionable but I'm comfortable. In 10 years, I hope to be age 75. I'm going to get there by the grace of God.. I met Butchie Thomson, a long life friend until this day. I was 16 and I believe it was on a street corner in Jersey City where we met. He was looking for me to give me a message from some girl. In those days when a guy was looking for another guy he didn't know if it spelled trouble or not. Butchie was and still is a good friend to this day. I have always considered him my best friend. My first job was on a produce truck, where I got paid $15/wk to deliver fruits and vegetables to customers. What I remember most about it is working everyday after school and all day Saturday and eating all the fruit I can! Especially cherries. There are so many childhood memories but building a scooter from a #5 Union skate, a 2x4X6 foot plank and a wooden milk carton was the best ride I ever had as a child. Wore out many right foot sneakers too! Mom was not happy about seeing one sneaker with big holes in it and the other like new. Wow! I can write a book with over 15,000 characters remaining! High School was a trip for me. I just couldn't get myself to do what I was suppose to do. How I managed it is beyond me. I worked everyday after school until 9:00 PM. and too tired to do any school assignments for homework. At age 17 it was time for me to go.......right into the US Navy and I have no regrets to this day. I knew that I was never going to make it to college and Med School to become a Brain Surgeon. Of course that was not my great aspiration. Life doesn't always workout the way we expect it to, does it? No one said it was going to be easy. Those who worked hard and struggled reaped the rewards and those who did nothing also got what they deserved. Classmates! Where are you all??? Sure would like to read your Story and what you remember most about your HS days. Strange that I can't remember any of my teachers from Lincoln HS. Maybe it was because none had left an impression on me.There is only one I can remember from Dickinson HS. She was my English teacher, Mrs. Loesch. I don't know if that is the correct spelling. I know that she was very concerned about me leaving school to enlist into the Navy. She was so sad and said to me; "Orvell, you're too young to go into the military." It wasn't my idea to enlist. I had a friend who talked me into it. Still, I have no regrets. The things that life throws at you can be a real adventure when you're not ready for it and don't see it coming. I hope you're enjoying what I have written so far. Everyone has something to say about themselves but most will never reveal it and that is sad. We're all here for a short time and the impression we make on our families and friends will last a long time. Even those who never had the honor of meeting you in person will know what you stood for. And that is a good thing for most. Your children and grandchildren will be left your memories to pass on to their children. A legacy you cannot neglect to leave behind. Take a trip down Memory Lane and share with us a page from the Book of Your Life. I can't tell you how excited I am to have just reconnected with a long time friend from Dickinson HS. Isn't God wonderful? He knows exactly what we need at the right moment in our lives to fill our hearts with joy. Spring is here in New Jersey and it's that time once again for tending to the lawn and flowers. Fresh cut grass has an aroma all it's own and who can resist the smell of a rose. Funny how the things we had no interest in during our teen years now draws us closer to nature. As children we were curious of our environment but as we grew our curiosity waned. And now we come full circle back to where we left off. There are classmates who request to be a friend that I don't know. They leave no indication as to who they are. No photo, no story, nothing whatsoever. So, if you're reluctant to tell me who you are then how can I know who it is that request to being a friend? Time has a way of removing our memory of those we once knew and a little help is all that is needed to recall a classmate. And I thought I was the shy one at school. Now I see most of you who stop by are silent about who you are. Makes one wonder why anyone would join Classmates and not even say Hi and let us all know how life is going for you. hildren today and yet, life for us was exciting. Summer couldn't come fast enough and everyday there was always something new to occupy the long hours of daylight. Levi jeans, a T-shirt and PF Flyers was the dress code for us guys and Peddle pushers, tank-tops and sandals for you ladies. Activities galore kept us busy from sun up to sun down. Union #5 steel roller skates that tore the heck out of our shoes, playing marbles in the dirt that eventually wore big holes in the knees of our dungarees, (yes, dungarees is what we called them back then), wood spinning tops, yoyos, bottle cap games and scooter and soapbox building made from baby carriage wheels and a milk crate. Stick ball and wall bounce ball where you catch 21 flies off the wall edge. Fishing for kilies at Lincoln Park and not to forget the famous Lincoln Park playground and who hasn't sat in Abe Lincoln's lap at the entrance? Yep! It was really cool growing up in Jersey City! I've only scratched the surface of the fun things we did as kids but these memories of our childhood should be past onto our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. If you are fortunate enough to see them. I look forward to reading your comments and things you remember about those summer days in Jersey City. July 21, 2012 Good morning! I want to thank those of you who have visited my page and said hello! Especially the one person I recently had lunch with. It had been more than 40 years since we last saw one another and what a great joy it was to meet after all these years! Sorry, can't reveal who they are but I can say we had a great conversation about those days when we were just getting started with our lives. We talked about some of our friends we remembered back then. Whatever happened to__________ and where is__________.now? And we were sadden by those who past on and those who are dealing with health issues in their lives. Our prayers go out to them. I hope that this will inspire those of you who read this to meet up with someone from your past. School Reunions are great but you can't really enjoy a one to one meeting with a person you had known as a teen. I hope there will be others who I can meet again one day soon. Have a great summer and God bless you! Orrie Here it is October 28th already and Halloween 3 days away! I had more fun on Halloween as a kid than any other time of the year! Mischief night was just that and we did things that weren't too nice to the neighborhood residents but no one was injured during our knocking over trash cans and making dumb phone calls to strangers and telling them we were the phone repairmen and that they needed to whistle for us. After two or three whistles we would thank and inform them they would be receiving a box of bird seed in the mail for their cooperation. There were other pranks we did over the phone and got a big laugh out of telling someone they won the grand prize of a trip to the funny farm. Today, the kids hit cars with eggs and shaving cream or toilet paper a house. Trick or Treat was quite different for us back then. Sure, we got candy but the money was better! Pennies, nickles and sometimes you got a dime or two! Apples, oranges and nuts was also added to the large brown paper bag we carried with us. Costumes were creations of our own imaginations. We didn't have money to buy a fancy disguise. Twenty five cents got to a makeup kit at the 5 and 10. Most popular was a Hobo! It was easy to get an over-sized pair of ripped dungarees and stuff them with newspaper and wear a worn out coat and hat. Used a broomstick and tied a hankey full of trash to the end of it to carry over our shoulder. Pumpkins were just about in everyone's window with all types of scary expressions on them as they flickered candle light in the dark. Those were really good times back then! Last day of April of 2013 and Spring is in full bloom. Pollen attacks our senses and as we grow older they intensify each year that passes us by. Once again it's time to connect with distant friends and hopefully make some new ones and while we're at it, do something we never done before. Anyway, I hope 2013 brings each of you good things into your lives! July 21, 2013 It's been awhile since my last posting and just wanted to say hello to everyone. I hope all is well with you and your families and that you're staying cool in this blistering humid heat we're having. We've been getting ready to place our home here on the market for sale and move out of New Jersey. It just is too expensive to live in Bergen County anymore. Everything goes up in cost and pensions stay the same. People say that we are to live within our means but I'm sure many of you will agree with me that our means are shrinking. As we age and the children leave the nest adjustments to our lifestyles must be made. Our needs and desires for things we were accustomed to early in our lives are no longer an attraction. We look towards taking it easy and enjoying the so called Golden Years or as I like to call them, The Twilight Years. The thing is, we find ourselves trying to accomplish all we can now that there is more expendable time on our hands. Why is that? Some of you have grandchildren and even great grand children which bring joy into your lives each and every day. Our boys are not even married yet and there are no grandchildren to brag about. I guess they haven't found their true love but I'm sure they are looking. On a note about friends. I have angered a couple of them recently with my stubborn attitude about certain beliefs I hold to and they have gotten in the way of our friendship. As friends, we try to help one another. Seeing what is evident in their lives that we believe to be a character flaw or something that is hurting them. I found that they are offended easily when it is revealed to them. Most people do not want to hear the truth because it hurts. Especially when it comes from a good friend who cares about them. It's a life's lesson that I have learned, to keep my opinions to myself about those who I care about. The wounds have been inflicted but I hope time will heal them and our relationship to one another. Enjoy the the day and may God shower His blessings on each of you! Orrie Today, on the 24th of December I want to wish each of you and your families a Merry Christmas and may the blessed peace of Christ be yours throughout the coming year. It is a time when we put our differences aside and share in the joy we all experience as Christians God's love for us through His Holy Son Jesus. May His spirit touch each of you always. Orrie April 6, 2014 Finally the snow is gone and things are starting to look better in terms of the weather. On a sad note, one of the most dedicated men who ever served in the Jersey City Fire Department and a volunteer in his home town tragically lost his life on February 28, 2014 while fighting a fire. Maybe some of you have heard of Captain Greg Barnas' passing on the news. He leaves behind a wife and two sons who are also in the fire service. When one of our brother or sister firefighters loses their life in the line of duty communities of firefighters from local and out of state come to honor them. It is a bond similar to those who serve in the military. Please remember his family in your prayers. Thank you. June 30, 2014 Hello Classmates! Just a quick note. I hope all of you and your families are enjoying the warm weather that has finally arrived here in New Jersey. My wife Christine and I just celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary on June 15th. It's hard for me to believe it's been that long. Her and I traveled some rough roads together but thankfully most were smooth during our marriage and we are looking forward to what lies ahead down the road of life for us as we're getting ready to sell our home here in Rutherford and move to upstate New York. Well, may you all enjoy the summer and God bless each of you. Orrie
