Pamela's Story

Life I had two children, first a girl born 1967...Susan, and then a boy James born 1977. I now have three Grandchildren...Katie 20, Eddie 17, and Donald 15. I was married once and stayed in that marriage for 15 years, I have never married again. Now I am single and love it, for the first time in my life I can do whatever I want. I work for the State of California for the Environmental Protection Agency, specifically Pesticide Regulation Division. I am the Executive Secretary to the two Assistant Directors. But, I have only worked for the State for ten years. My past employment was mainly male occupations, because that's where the money was. I worked in the woods for a couple of years (with my husband) cutting and stacking logs. I worked in a boat factory and also worked 8 years in an open pit mining operation owned by GAF, they made the tiny rocks that are on your roof shingles. It was located in Wisconsin and it was rough, cold work... but three times the pay of any other job in the area...I was hired because of the "Women's Lib" movement...the main office told this company that they had to hire women (because GAF sold film to the government) and believe me I wasn't there because I wanted to be a liberated woman, I was there because the pay was so good...and it was a little rough, these guys had wor...Expand for more
ked 35 years in that business without a woman there and it was pretty rough at times. I also worked at an Army base loading ammo for shipment. I finally decided that that kind of work was too hot, too cold, too dirty, and getting too hard to do...so I went to college and finally graduated in 1990 with a Business Occupations Degree. My first job for the State was in a prison, in the Education Department, I was behind the walls and it was an interesting job. It seems my life has kind of been a life of extreme's. We left Washington when Boeing shut so much down in 1969, no jobs in that area. Moved to Oregon for a few years and then we went to Wisconsin, where my husband parents and sister lived. It was so cold there, from October to March the average temperature in the teens below zero and then I move to a place in California that in the summer the average temperature is in the 100's plus. I have had a full life with lots of experiences. Washington has always held my heart though, I plan to move to the penninsula where my brother lives when I retire. The rain in Washington is so much better than the snow of Wisconsin. Hope to hear from a few of you in my class, don't have a yearbook anymore, they somehow got forgotten in the move from Portland to Wisconsin and I don't remember a lot of the names anymore.
