Pamela's Story
Started SAMOHI in February 1971, after the earthquake. Hung out on the Boardwalk and Pier with Dale Welch, Donnie Durio (we were together off and on for over 3 years), Carl Freeman, Carl Francis, Kenneth Welch, George Smith (2 of them), Mike Potter, Steve Reed, Ronnie and "Boo" Carpenter, and many others. At SAMOHI I "dated" a surfer named Val who had a van, lived in Malibu, and his buddy was called "Vegas". I had been warned he was a player, but had to find out myself. They were right. My best buddy was Dale Welch. I also "dated" John M. Klinchock III for a couple weeks. I wore "hot pants" with suede boots and the shortest skirts/dresses possible (with my bikini bottoms underneath). I was quiet, shy, and high most always. Attended school when i felt it necessary and doubt if anyone even remembers who I am. SAMOHI and Santa Monica were the best of times and I have great memories from there. I also remember the names of girls I hung with off and on for a very short time. Kim B. and Teri ? and Susan Wysocki at school. And Jill (aka: Snoopy) whose father was a biker. Jill introduced me to her home, her room of surprisingly very ...Expand for more
girlie furnishings and stuffed animals AND, most memorable and fascinating of all, her father's necklace hanging on the livingroom wall. Those who knew her know what I am referring to. Unfortunately, I was quite poor and unable to purchase the Nautilus 1972 yearbook or a class ring. No one I knew closely went to the Prom or could afford to go. And I wasn't asked, anyway. And you won't find MY picture in the yearbook because I forgot to have it taken and the year before, i believe I began SAMOHI too late in the year. Damn. My hellos to all ya' all. Good times and good memories. Oh, on the evening of the first day of school for 12th grade (1971-72 semester) if anyone was around, you could have found me, George Smith (I referred to as "white George" since I knew two) and our now empty bottles of Ripple, taking photos at the photo booth on the pier, drunk as heck, "ripped" from Ripple, for sure. But, I did straighten up enough to graduate and begin life as an adult. Huh? That ended those good times. Dale had joined the Army before graduation and life changed dramatically. Later, I became a Registered Nurse and have since retired.
