Pamela's Story
Life
After 25 years living in Ann Arbor, MI, husband John and I relocated in April 2001 to sunny San Diego, CA. He is a software engineer at Sony On-Line Entertainment, the folks who brought you Everquest and other Internet interactive games, and I woked in managed healthcare in one position or another from around 1985 (used to be a practicing RN, no longer practicing) till 2008. After a couple of years as a healthcare consultant for a couple of companies, traveling throughout the state of California doing data abstraction for research and managed care regulatory surveys, I have now stopped traveling and taken a full-time job back in quality improvement for a health care system.
I have one daughter, an assistant professor in the clinical psychology department at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and two stepsons who both work i the compuer industry, one in Dayton, OH and the other in Ann Arbor, MI. No grandkids yet. Anyone coming to San Diego is welcome to call and stop by, or arrange to meet - I'd love to see you!
School
After Farmington HS, like several of us, I went on to college at Southeast Missouri State to major in music education...Expand for more
. I quickly learned that teaching was not for me, and besides I fell in love and got married the summer of 1966. Eventually I went back and earned a diploma in nursing, then a Bachelors in nursing, and finally a Masters in administration. I am definitely done now.
Workplace
After a false start in music education at SEMO I eventually ended up in nursing, choosing psychiatric nursing as my specialty. That changed in 1985 when I went into quality assurance, then I made an abrupt turn in 1989 and went into managed care. Fourteen years later I have had many positions within this field, both in behavioral healthcare and on the medical side, primarily with HMOs or capitated hospital-physician groups. After four years with United Behavioral Health here in San Diego, I resigned to become an independent healthcare consultant, and have been traveling throughout the state of California doing a variety of jobs. Having been on the road about 85 - 90% of the time, I have now taken a full-time job back in quality improvement in a health care system. I plan to work as long as I find it interesting and challenging, no retirement for me as long as enjoy working.
