I had the highest grades at graduation making me class Valedictorian. Mother Eileen asked me to step down as Valedictorian for Carole, the girl who had just one point lower than me. Carole, she told me, had parents who could afford to send her to college. Being Valedictorian would help her get accepted, My mother had died that year & we would have been too poor anyway. She, Mother Eileen, said I could be Salutarian and that was still pretty good. If anyone else had asked, I would have said No...but we all loved Mother Eileen. I stepped down. I did not go to college until I was 45 years old. I lied (or was it) that I graduated Valedictorian but in the grand scheme of things I hope it got Carole in when she applied after high school. Pat is single. Her schools include Mary Immaculate High School, Pikes Peak Community College, University of Oregon BS and University of Oregon Graduate school Public Administration.
