Pat's Story

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing everyone at the SWD Mega Reunion May 19, 2012! I wish I'd had more time to visit with everyone there. Friends can always reach me at pat AT patsabin DOT com or on F a c e b o o k . BACKGROUND STUFF My older sisters and I spent most of our childhood in Columbus, Georgia, and we moved to the Atlanta area right before Christmas in 1960. We rented a very cute little cottage style house in the "Great Lakes" area of the City of Decatur, and loved our neighborhood and schools. We learned to dance "The Twist" and "The Pony" at the neighborhood pool on Church Street. In June 1961, we bought a new house in Toney Gardens (on Thrasher Circle). Our parents lived there until about 1979 when they moved to Lilburn. I attended Columbia Elementary School for a couple of years, and we three oldest sisters (Elaine, Donna, Pat) attended SWD, while our youngest sister, Julie, graduated from Columbia HS. Many of our family friends were through the Toney Gardens "Hi Neighbor" Club, Hillside Presbyterian Church, and Dad's associates with Georgia Power Company. In several cases, two or three of these groups overlapped. SINCE 1968... After high school, I attended UGA for four years , and graduated with a BA in Journalism. For about ten years, I worked for Ellmans in diamond and fine jewelry management and sales. I've been a full time real estate agent in Gwinnett County since 1986. I can't include a link to my web site, but just search Pat Sabin. You'll find my e-mail address there, too. My friends would say that I work too much to have fun, but I enjoy driving in the country, finding waterfalls, going out to eat, movies, TV, and music. We have season tickets to the Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville (great live theatre). I love local history and genealogy, and vintage postcards, and host a number of web sites (including Gwinnett County GAGenWeb). I don't paint as much as I used to, but I've been an avid photographer since college. Maybe I...Expand for more
'll get back to my watercolors sometime soon. I've had a lot of requests for images of my vintage postcards, so a couple of years ago, I started scanning the most popular ones and digitally restoring the images for print media, documentaries, and framing. It's been very enjoyable, and I love meeting people from around the country. When I can get out of town, I usually go to the Isle of Palms in South Carolina, or the mountains of East Tennessee. My favorite vacations include beautiful scenery, good food, old buildings and cemeteries, and peace and quiet. Perfect combo for me! Unfortunately, my vacations usually include laptop, printer, e-mail, etc., etc. I hope to see more of this country, including revisits to places I love, like Portland, Oregon. At the top of the list is a week in Chicago and surrounds. My favorite TV shows are Being Human, Grimm, The Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time, The Office, Grey's Anatomy, & House. Since taking a big dive over a 12 foot embankment in October 2010, badly fracturing my arm and shoulder, I have been drawn to survival shows like "I Shouldn't Be Alive" on Animal Planet. :-) My preferences in music are eclectic. I love "The Script" and a lot of alternative rock. I still listen to old rock and roll as well as folk music. I've been looking through old yearbooks and reading diaries from high school and college (how embarrassing!). If you're a guy, I may have had a crush on you at some point in high school, and it was always real LOVE...until the next week. More appalling than that is that I couldn't spell! I don't know how I managed A's and B's on my report cards. In 1968, I would have voted for Nixon if I had turned 18 before the cut off for registration (election day was my birthday). When I was able to vote, I never voted for a Republican candidate. Except for an early shift in social consciousness and politics, I think I am very much the same person that I was in HS and college. Pretty scary, huh?
