Patricia's Story
Life
My husband and I have been married for 49 years.(2009) We have three children. I stayed at home while raising the children and then returned to teaching. I taught several different grades during my teaching span and also was a science mentor. I am now retired and enjoying the freedom of retirement.
School
I started school in first grade at Coldbrook Park in Elmira, NY. We had double grades with one teacher in charge of two grades. I attended Coldbrook until my family moved. Coldbrook was a very nice neighborhood school. During my last years there, they had to go on double session due to overcrowding. The third grade went in the morning, and the fourth grade in the afternoon, etc.
I entered fifth grade in Wellsburg Union, at Wellsburg, NY. Again we had double grades. Wellsburg was a complete school going from kdn. to 12th. In seventh and eight grade we passed classes as did the high school. At the end of our eight grade experience, the state moved in to close our high school sendi...Expand for more
ng future classes to Southside High School in Elmira, NY. Graduation from grammar school was at the end of eigth grade.
Southside was a huge school encompassing most of one side of the city. Our class was the first of larger classes. Our class advisers told us we were the worst class to come along, and that we'd never amount to anything. I often wondered if they had changed their opinion when they encounted the classes in the years that followed. We really were mild and yes, we did amount to something! Our 50th anniversary is this year!(2004)
Upon graduation, I entered Brockport State Teacher's College in Brockport, NY.
College
I did graduate studies at Elmira College and received my Master's Degree.
I went on to Cornell University and did an additional 27-29 hours toward a doctorate during the late 70's and early 80's. This included two overseas trips. One was an intensive study of the educational system and the society of the Soviet Union. The other was an overseas trip to Italy.
