Pat's Story
Life
Well...I went to Garibaldi hi-school in Maple Ridge or Haney as it was called back then, for gr. 8. 9 & 9 and then to Port Coquitlam Hi-school for gr. 10, 11. Then I moved out on my own to the big city of downtown Vancouver, just off Main & Broadway.
I worked at Vancouver General Hospital as a dietary aid for a while & then for a change I worked at some downtown nightclubs until I had to have some major surgery and was told no work for 6 months.
So..I moved back to Poco with my Grandmother and took some schooling at Vancouver city college, for office work.. accounting, business machines, shorthand, etc.
Again I worked in Vanc. for Vancouver Upholstery in the office, until I decided to move to New Westminster, where I got a job through Marilyn Allen-O'connor at Westminster Auto Leasing & Rentals, where I worked renting out vehicles and doing office work until I moved to the Leasing dept. where it was all typing and paperwork.
In the meantime I had met Don and he went to work in Dawson Creek, and when someone had tried to break the apt. door down one night, I decided to move as well.
I worked on the road flagging and driving pilot car for the paving crew and Don ran loader at the asphalt plant.
We moved around the province for a few years, living in Merritt, Rock Creek, Prince George, Surrey, Fort St. John, Kitwanga. In between somewhere we bought a litle house at the end of Lorne Ave. in Hammomd and then fixed it up and sold it to go work on the road again.
When we moved from town to town, we lived in a travel trailer, or a fifth wheel trailer, so we took our home with us.
Once there was going to be a new addition to the family, we decided we needed more room, so we bought a mobile home in Maple Ridge in 1985 just before Peter came along and in 1987 we need...Expand for more
ed one more room for Dustin and were going to move when the owner of the Motel and Trailer Court asked us to manage the place as he wanted to retire.
That was Sept, 1988 and we moved into the "bighouse" connected to the office and except for 2 years when we lived in Ruskin and the kids went to Silverdale school, we have lived at the Centennial Motor Inn & Trailer Court and I cleaned up, managed it and the Maple Ridge Motel & Trailer Court next door for most of those years. Don worked in Pitt Meadows for Pitt River Quarries, Columbia Bitulithic, and finally Lafarge when they bought it out,
until he retired a few years ago and then helped me around the motels.
The boys went to Maple Ridge Primary & Elementary schools and then to Westview Secondary, where they both graduated. One's an office worker for a lighting co. and the other an apprentice plumber/pipefitter.
Don and I travelled quite a bit during the winters before the boys were born and now that they are getting older we started travelling every winter again for the last 5 years, to warm places like Hawaii, Mexico & Cuba.
Now that we are semi retired and out of the motels we moved to Abbotsford, B.C. and travel lots if we fly somewhere it is 2-3 weeks and if we drive it's usually 1-2 months..Last winter/spring (2013) we drove south across the mexican border in Arizona (El Gadones), East around the Gulf of Mexico to all the southern states and down the west coast of Florida, out to Key West, then North up the east coast of Florida, thru Georgia to Tennessee to see my neice for a day and our good friends we hadn't seen for like 12 years for a few days and then west thru places like Graceland, Branson, the Smokies and the Ozarks, and then north home. 58 days and 12,000 miles. It was wonderful weather and scenery.
