Patti's Story

YESTERDAY is experience.... TOMORROW is hope............ TODAY is getting from one to the other, as best we can. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away... Those are two of my favorite quotes! A little or a lot about me now...... I attended College Hill Academy until my junior year, then transferred back to Oxford High School. I graduated from OHS in 1975 with most of the people I went through elementary school with! After graduation, I entered Ole Miss and started working toward becoming a teacher. After my freshman year, I married my husband, Gary. I worked harder and faster than ever to finish my degree to become a teacher. So, I graduated in December of 1978. Because teaching positions are usually not available that time of the year, I did a lot of substitute teaching and entered graduate school, mostly taking night classes. I started my teaching career at Lafayette Elementary School in Oxford, MS in the fall of 1979. I taught first grade for two years during the school years of 1979-1980 and 1980-1981. After that, my husband and I moved to Wyoming. I continued teaching in a small WY town called Powell and a school called Parkside Elementary School for four years where I also taught first grade. The school years included 1981-82, 1982-83, 1983-84 & 1984-85. During the summer of 1985, we moved to Cody, WY, only 30 miles away due to my husband's new job. I chose to be a "stay at home mom" for a few years to our 2 year old daughter (born in 1983). Because I started my Master's Degree in MS, I had to finish it within 5 years, so I went back during the summer I was pregnant with my daughter and the summer after she was born and completed it. It was HARD to do with a baby! Once again, thank God for Mom's (My Mom)! I went...Expand for more
back to teaching when she entered 2nd grade. I was teaching half-time at Wapiti School, a rural school of just 40 students, grades K-6 about 18 miles from Cody in the mountains. After just 3 months of teaching at Wapiti School, we were surprised with the wonderful news of a baby boy. We adopted him at birth and had been waiting over 2 years. Little did we know he would come just 3 months after I decided to go back to teaching. With maternity leave, Christmas break and a dear friend to watch him until my mom retired and came to WY from MS, it all worked out. I only taught at Wapiti for one year, 1990-91. The following year, I began teaching at Sunset School in Cody as Reading Specialist (1991-92) and transferred to first grade the next year (1992-93). I taught at Sunset School for 13 years total including first grade, the Age Blended Classroom (1st & 2nd), third grade and four years as Reading Specialist. I was District Literacy Facilitator for part of 2004 before my health problems caused me to retire early. I've been retired due to disability since the end of 2004. My oldest daughter is 25, my son is 17 and will be a senior this fall (2008-09) and I have a 6 year old daughter starting Kindergarten! I am also the proud grandmother of a 14 month old granddaughter. I've been married for 32 years to the same man, Gary. He's a pharmacist and is Director of Pharmacy at the local hospital here in Cody. We own and operate Diamond T Foxtrotters, a small horse operation, but horses are the love of my life, though I'm no longer able to ride them. It was a horse accident that caused my initial injury that led to many problems, surgeries, chronic pain and eventually my disability. But, I can still work with the babies and my hopes and prayers are to one day be able to ride again.
