Paul (Lester)'s Story

After graduating from Lanier High School for Boys in Macon,GA., I attended Macon Jr. College and worked as a stock clerk for the new Hilton Hotel where I had quite a few interesting experiences. Everything from seeing little Donny Osmond running around the penthouse in his "jammies" to almost pinning Johnny Cash and his entourage against the back of the service elevator while they were sneaking him upstairs from the underground garage. I was drafted my second year at Macon Jr. and managed to join the Navy. I attended Boot Camp in Orlando, FL., School in Memphis, TN. and was assigned to VA-174 "Hell Razors" squadron at Cecil Field, Jacksonville, FL. The first two years I work as an Instructor in FRAMP and the last 1 1/2 years I work nights as an AZ2 in Maintenance Control. At VA-174 we had three permanent detachments: one on either the Lexington or Saratoga aircraft carriers, one in Yuma, AZ. and one in Falon, NV. At any time, we could spend three weeks serving at any of the detachments, which kept things from getting boring. I, also, learned to fly while I was station at Cecil Field. After being discharged from the Navy in '75, I joined the Naval Reserve, returned to Macon and finished my Associates Degree in Biology at the Jr. College. I took off a year to work and save some money and ended up marrying. The fall of '78 I started school at the University of Georgia. I finished my undergraduate Degree in Chemistry and my oldest daughter, Lesley, was born in '81. I started graduate school receiving my Masters Degree in Physical Chemistry in the Spring of '83. My research resulted in three papers and two symposiums being published in technical periodicals. The summer of '83 we moved to Amelia Island (Fernandina Beach), Florida and I went to work for Petroferm USA, Inc. as a Development Chemist. Petroferm had been paying me while I was attending graduate school and offered me a job on graduation...Expand for more
. While working for Petroferm, I received five or six patents as the primary inventor and receive one dollar for each. One patent was licensed to Orinoco Petroleum for seven million dollars several years later (if only I could have worked on percentage). My second daughter, Ashley, was born in '85. After working ten years for Petroferm, I went to work for Anchor Lithchemco in Orange Park, Florida (southwest Jacksonville) as a Research Chemist. Anchor was the largest producer of chemicals for the printing industry in the U.S. While working for Anchor, I received the "Technical Achievement Award" from International Paper Corp. for pioneering "low VOC" (volitile organic compounds, smog producers) products for the printing industry. In 1996 I devorced and in 2000 I left Anchor after Fuji purchased us from International Paper. In 2001 I contracted an arbo virus from a mosquito and almost died from it (they were not sure whether it was the St. Louis or West Nile Virus). I spent one month in the hospital in intensive care (of which I have no memory) followed by 18 days in Brookes Rehab and almost a year in outpatient rehab. I never want to go through that experience again. In December of 2002 I went to work for the Nassau County Department of Environmental Health in Fernandina Beach for one year (a low pressure position to make sure that I was capable of returning to work). In December of 2003 I went to work for Amrep, Inc. in Jacksonville as a Senior Research and Development Chemist. A year and a half later they closed down the Jax plant and I transferred to Marietta, GA. where I presently work. Last August, my younger daughter, Ashley, gave me my first grand daughter but I still don't feel like a grand parent! Although there are some aspects of working in Georgia that I like, it is still really difficult being away from my family, the beach and the ocean, as well as, small town life (NO TRAFFIC)!
