Paul's Story

Life Updated June 2022 Living in Lansing, KS, I retired in 2007 from 32 years of teaching German, algebra, science and driver ed. I continue to substitute teach at the local high school. I married Claudia Rogers of Topeka in 1975 and God has been good to us in all that we have done and been involved with from a 4-year stay in Germany with its rich history and character to having blessed us with two wonderful sons, the youngest granting us three granddaughters....and only 30 minutes away! I have learned that all those injuries sustained in my growing up years revisit in older age! One was a dislocated shoulder as a result of a fall from scrambling up the west hill alongside Lake Bassola on a motorcycle in 1970. 2008 has been a very painful year...rotator cuff and shoulder restoration in May, lumbar discectomy in Sept, fused neck in Dec.! The back surgery was most likely from an injury sustained while on a construction job in 1976 (or was it when I fell off a tractor when I was about 12 and consequently ran over?) and then the years of jogging and weight lifting. I remember Iola with fondness as a place where I emerged from my shell working at Self Service Grocery and going on to ACCC to become the vice president of the student council, which I spearheaded to change to a senate which still exists. I recall the days I sat in my dorm room working on calculus problems for umpteen hours while I viewed others out the window playing basketball and having a great time. One instance, to break the monotony I guess, was getting into a huge water fight in the dorm to include using wastebaskets and the old large bronze soda water fire extinguishers located at each end of the hallways, and which landed me and a few other cohorts in the office of Mr. Brown to explain just what we had do...Expand for more
ne. Remember Moe and Fred--those two crazy Iranian engineering students? Moe had no idea about the rules of basketball and he used to stand up in the bleachers and do his unique and loud clicking of index fingers yelling at the refs for who knew what. Remembered too are the drag races we had from Bassola on Old Highway 169 and going into town...either to the car wash to spend seemingly endless hours polishing and cleaning or to Kings or the Sonic. Womack's '64 Chevy 409 was one fast car! Then there was the cruising through town and around the square which reminds me of the times during Halloween when we threw rotten eggs at passing cars (mostly at each other!) from a crate purchased from the local chicken factory and which we soon learned ate off the paint if those splattered eggs weren't immediately washed off. And finally those wonderful community center and armory dances with live music...thanks guys for all those great memories! Now questioning where all the time has gone, I am much more settled...restored a '52 Chevy pickup in '96, sold that in about 2015 and now have an '80 Chevy Scottsdale- love the AC! As always I am busy in my local church with teaching and leading. I still enjoy cruising, but these days on my Kawasaki 900 (gave up on the 1800 VTX- got too heavy for me!). Workplace I taught for 32 years in 5 different schools from junior high to college. As a teacher I have always had extra jobs that have added interest and a deeper dimension to my life from various ministries, investment sales, operating a driving school to being a tour escort in Germany. After a seven year hiatus I began again to substitute teach in 2014 which is now a joy without the responsibility of outcomes! Join us on Facebook- let's catch up! Iola High School Class of 1969!!

Europe, too, is beginning to question the shutdown. Interesting will be if free nations return to draconian restrictions with another outbreak, or, if citizens will assert their individual rights.

Our Republic cannot long stand under these conditions. It makes us vulnerable to extreme measures and nefarious forces. Our economy cannot and will not withstand this strain, and it will marshal more demand for government
