Paul's Story

Life Met my spouse, Sheila, in her native city, Portsmouth, Virginia. We werre introduced by a mutual friend. We spent the next eleven years in the U. S. Navy. During our military career, we resided in VA, Republic of the Phillipines, CA, and my unaccompanied year on Diego Garcia, BIOT. The following 23 years, we resided in Portsmouth, VA, while I worked for the Department of Defense/Navy. Sheila worked in Medical Billing. I went to college in the evenings to earn my BA. I remain in Portsmouth. We reared a daughter and a son, who have since left the nest to reside in CA & TX, respectively. My daughter and son-in-law have moved back and are residing in Newport News, VA, just across the river from me. Both Sheila and I are fully retired, and our only responsibility is to enjoy life. Both of us are in relatively good lhealth, although the good life has added too many pounds to each of us. We usually spend a good portion of our summers in TN, where we visit family and go to my two family reunions. My brother and I do some fishing, while I'm in TN. Sheila and I do a lot of book reading, also, while we're there. Sheila, love of my life and best friend, passed away in April of 2011. She's singing God's praises with the Heavenly Choir. I'll see her in the bye and bye. I am engaged to a Canadian lady, Lorna. No date has been scheduled for a wedding. We're in no rush. My daughter and son-in-law moved back to this area, in 2010, to be near. They live in Newport News, 30 or so miles from me. Lorna, also, lives in Newport News. My son lives in Houston, TX, still. My daughter's cat, Auzzie, passed about three months, ago. I am enjoying life, growing old, broad, and thick. It aint all muscle, folks. Lorna and I enjoy church services and activities, Bible study on Wednesday evenings, going to our coffeehouse's(The Well) Southern Gospel(on Fridays) and contemporary Christian music(on Saturdays), as well as Lifetree discussions(on Sunday afternoons). We attend and actively participate in the functions of The Salvation Army church. We enjoy singing as members of our praise and worship team. We truly enjoy the blessings of God's awesome mercy and grace. My Cremation I want my ashes separated into two portions. North of the belly button in one portion. South of the belly button in the other portion. Spread my heart and mind in Sequatchie Valley. Put my butt out to sea. My Pets Actually, Auzzie, our cat, belongs to my daughter, Paula. Since our Rottie-Golden Retriever, Bo, passed, Auzzie is the only household pet. He's a special little guy with a lot of imagination. He's got a couple pillows and a blanket that he drags through the house and you are liable to find them almost anywhere. It's really funny to watch him drag those things around. He takes his naps on whichever of them that he's dragged last. I guess it wears him out and he just takes a rest break. He's the only cat that I have ever known to carry his bedding around with him. is, taken Auzzie to their new home in Navato, CA. We no longer have a pet in our home. We, now, have a empty nest.)(Auzzie passed in 2013) About a year, prior to my wife's passing, Foofie( a Maine Coon cat) adopted us. She was all tangled and knotted up when she took up with us, but she is all smoothed out and healthy, now. She was a great companion, following Sheila's passing. I call her my "Angel Kitty". My Job I retired from active duty with the US Navy, as a Electronics Technician Chief Petty Officer, in April of 1980, after 19 years and seven months. During my service, I was stationed: US Navy Recruit Training Center(Boot Camp), San Diego, CA (Boot) US Navy Electronics "A" School, Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA (Student Basic Electronics) US Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, FL (UHF/HF Communications Repair Technician) US Navy Electronics "B" School, Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA (Student Advance Electronics) US Navy Crypto Repair Schools, Mare Island, Vallejo, CA (Student) USS Shelton (DD-790), San Digo, CA (two Viet Nam War tours of duty) (Leading Electrics Repair Technician) US Navy Crypto Repair School, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, VA (Instructor) US Navy Crypto Repair Facility, Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines (Online Crypto Repair Technician/Technical Representative) US Navy ADCOP, Grossmont Community College, El Cajon, CA (Student in Associate Degree Completion Program) US Navy Communications Station, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory(BIOT) (Station Electronics Maintenance Chief) USS Savannah (AOR-4), Norfolk, VA (Ship's Electronics Maintenance Chief and ship's 3M Coordinator(Corrective, preventative, scheduling all shipboard maintenance efforts) Mobile Technical Unit Two, Norfolk, VA (Shipboard Communications Maintenance Technical Representative, providing technical assistance and training to ship's technicians in continental US, at sea, and overseas) Civilian (much the same as my Naval service--- didn't have to wear a uniform) I am a retired Electronics Technician specializing in Navy shipboard communications. My job was to provide technical assistance and on-the-job training for shipboard technicians and operators on various radio, audio, data, and on-line crypological systems. I provided those services in the classroom, on board ships while in port, while at sea, and when in overseas ports . I often flew to and landed on aircraft carriers; transfer from one ship to another by helicopter where I either landed on or was dropped by wire and sling to the ship's deck. On the return, I was lifted to helo by wire and sling or flown off the ship's deck; I was, normally, catapaulted from the carrier's flight deck when it's time to return home. These events were not my most enjoyable moments, and thankfully they were not the every-day fare. All-in-all, I really enjoyed my work and received much satisfaction from knowing that I helped the Navy's Electronics Technicians and Communicators to achieve self-sufficiency on the high seas.
