Paul's Story
I worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for over 34 years. (Yeah yeah....I know what you're thinking - Agriculture??? HUH??? Pretty good for a city boy, eh? LOL) While I started my career in Toledo, I have lived in Philadelphia, PA; Savannah, GA; Hartford, CT; and the Washington DC metro area (Northern Virginia). In April 2007, I voluntarily transferred back "home" to accept the Executive Director's position for the USDA Farm Service Agency in Monroe, Michigan. On December 2, 2011, I officially "retired" (at least from USDA) . Thank God for "buy-outs!" ;-)
My travels, both work and pleasure, have taken me to 44 States and to several foreign lands, including Europe (Ukraine, Switzerland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, & England); Asia (India); South America (Brazil); Africa (Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, Uganda, & Tanzania, the latter where I was "stranded" after 9/11); Mexico (love both Mexico City & Cancun) and the Caribbean (love St. Maarten even more as you can really "pack lite" for the stay there...if ya know what I mean). ;-D While each was interesting in its own right, I know firsthand just how truly blessed I am to live in the best country in the world. Most people in the U.S. really take things for granted. If they only knew...
I have been married to 1978 Whitmer grad Kathy Halbert for over 33 years. She truly is the love of my life and my soulmate. I'd be lost without her. We have two wonderful children. Our daughter Courtney is 29 and lives with her husband and our two grandchildren (Brady, 5 & Lexi, 3), in Honolulu, HI. Our son Joe is 27 and a security analyst wit...Expand for more
h the Department of Homeland Security (Federal Air Marshalls) in Northern Virginia. He married his high school sweetheart in June 2006. They blessed us with our third grandchild, Olivia, in October 2011. (I'm a "grandfather" - I'll still can't believe it). While I love my kids and grandkids more than anything in the world, "empty nesting" IS pretty nice. ;-)
When our kids were growing up, I was (past tense) actively involved in coaching youth sports in Northern Virginia (generally my son and his pals). I started with recreational and travel soccer, moved on to rec. and travel inline (roller) hockey, and finished coaching my son's high school inline hockey team. I now consider myself "retired" from coaching also.
To stay fit (a relative term at age 54), I work out regularly at the Y (weights & cardio), jog, bike, roller blade, and, as long as my knees will allow it, continue to play roller hockey. (NOTE: The latter ended in October 2010 after blowing out the ACL in my right knee. As Kathy has told me many times....."it's a YOUNG man's sport."). ;-)
I returned to the University of Toledo in the summer of 2011 to finally finish my degree in finance. (I never really dropped out of college - I just took a 28 YEAR "vacation"). My motivation is to now prepare for my post-retirement life. (My second career). After graduating in August 2012, I now have to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!
It was great seeing everyone at the recent Whitmer Class of '76 35-year reunion last year. (I just cannot believe we've been out of high school that long). Had a blast and looking forward to the next one!
