Paul's Story
Life
Things are going well for my family and I. Ive stayed busy through the years.
Just after high school I left for a short stint at Con College where I enrolled in a Millwright program. During the course we had an "on the job" training period that needed to be completed. I applied to do that at Ontario Hydro which was my employer as a student the summer before. I did the training and assisted with the re-build of one of the turbines at the Aquasobon Power Plant back home along Hydro Hill. That was an interesting experience.... being home for awhile worked out well too. Once the course wrapped up I was offered a full-time job as a Fitter Mechanic (turbine mechanic) with Hydro on the Nipigon River, however after having worked as a summer student with the line crew, my interests were with working outdoors. So it was back to Schreiber to work on the line crew where I started my apprenticeship as a power lineman.
My career with Ontario Hydro has been interesting. A few close calls, one on a falling pole and the other involving a 115,000 volt power line and a helicopter. Though Im still with Hydro but no longer climbing poles or towers, periodically I miss it, but then I go stand outside in January for 5 or 10 minutes and the feeling goes away :-)
Concerning personal interests, Im an avid bo...Expand for more
w hunter and REALLY enjoy sailing. I usually bow hunt moose in September (sometime near Schreiber) and white tail deer here in Kenora during November and spend an abundance of time sailing through the summer.
We keep a sailboat at one of the marinas in Kenora on Lake of the Woods and spend a lot of time on the lake. 4 of my buds and I race a 35' C&C a couple of times through the summer. That's a blast, sailing from Kenora to Warroad, Minnesota for 3 or 4 days. Sailing............ now theres something I wish I had gotten into 25 years ago. If you could ever teach your children to sail
what a life skill. You can bet that will be part of the retirement plan for Januarys and Februarys for this guy.
I have two wonderful boys, Chris and Kyler Moorey, both of which are two fine young men from a previous marriage with Corinne Cotton.
Kenora has proved to be a great place to live. It's probably one of Ontario's best kept secrets as a summer destination which is why Hydro is having such a difficult time trying to pry me out of here. The fishing is phenomenal and the lodges are spectacular around the lake. A 50' houseboat rental on a lake with 14,000 islands is something almost anyone would enjoy.
So thats the Readers Digest version of it all
