Paul's Story

Life After HS, I went right to college at New Jersey Institute of Technology and graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1993. Early '96, I thought I was only temporarily moving to VA when I was hired by a small company in Chantilly, VA (seasonal, thought it would be temporary) and I lived with my aunt and uncle. Eventually, another company hired me to another temp. position with better pay which led to a permanent position job and I ended up getting an apartment and started putting down roots here in VA. In this, short time, I had a spiritual re-awakening that led me to realize that the religion that fit me best was the one I grew up with. I know this sounds cliche, but it honestly happened to me, once I let God and Jesus back into my heart, my whole outlook turned around and with it, I can say looking back, my life. Case in point, not long (maybe a month or two) after my spiritual reawakening the next big milestone in my life happened: Oct. '96, I met a terrific lady, Kristine, (who would become my future wife) through the Catholic Young Adults Club. We hit it off right away and started dating soon after meeting. We found it ironic that we both grew up about 45 minutes apart (she lived in Middletown, NJ) and we both moved to VA before we met. June or July '97, my dad and mom divorced. Aug. '97 Kris and I became engaged. My dad remarried in June '98. Kris and I were married in Oct. '98. Almost on the two year anniversary of the day we met. In Sep. 2000 our son, and only child, was born. He had two birth defects, one corrected 3 days after his birth the other was corrected about 6 months later, after his doctor felt he was strong enough. As I write this he just turned 8 and if it were not for his surgery scars, you would not know that he had a very rough start. My dad retired in 2006 and moved to Delaware, ...Expand for more
which is, now, a short trip for us to visit. The majority of the rest of our families still live in NJ. my mom, the older of my two sisters and her husband and now my niece and her husband still live in Old Bridge. Unfortunately, we can't get to NJ as often as either my wife or I would like for visits with the families (not to mention good pizza) and when we do, it tends to be a "up one day, back the next". College Nothing special to say. I went to New Jersey Institute of Technology straight out of HS. I majored in and recieved my BS in Mechanical Engineering. Overall, it was a struggle for me to graduate with my degree in 4 years, looking back I would not have been so hard on myself and pushed myself to do it in 4 years, but that's hindsight. I also had a lot of fun. Sharing computer games, playing pool in between classes, joining the student SAE and working on the '92 and '93 Mini-Baja race car and getting to go to Cookeville, Tennessee and Orlando, Florida for the Mini-Baja competitions. One of the smartest things that I did was to take the Engineer In Training (EIT) test my Senior year in college. It helped greatly when it came time to qualify to take the Professional Engineer exam 10 years later, which I passed and has had a direct positive impact in my professional carreer. Workplace Early '96 Went to work for Soil Consultants, Inc. in Chantilly, VA. July '96 - May 2000 Worked for Lockheed Martin, Manssas, VA. (Started as a temp. position, then was hired into a permanent position 6 mos. later.) May 2000 - August 2001 Worked for RMC, Inc., Lexington Park, MD (worked on base at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station) August 2001 - November 2005 Worked for Department of Navy, Patuxent River Naval Air Station. April 2003 I passed the MD PE exam. November 2005 - Present Working for Architect of the Capitol, Washington, DC.
