Paula's Story
I kept much to myself when I was in Poway High School. I was born into a family with two cultures and had a hard time leading with that. After High School I came to Portugal on a vacation, in an attempt to get better acquainted with portuguese culture. I had never seen poverty like I saw here and decided that although I was not rich, I had a lot more that people around me. I decided that a way to hepl would be to become a nurse (something I had never thought about before). After I continued studying, stubburnly to know more about this country - I soecialized in Public Health, studied Sociology; got a master's degree in Sociology and now I am doing a PhD in Contemporary History.

and Macau. When I considered time, it was too late to return to the United States and I realized I had lost my fragile amercican roots, but I hadn't created roots in Portugal. Therefore my roots are myself and I have to be very careful not to loose myself - because I risk having nothing.
So I have learned to live this way - as a citizen of nowhere - and I am a survivor. But I am very proud of the fact that I lived in the United States, where I got all the tools I needed for my adventure. Sometimes I miss so many things I had in the States. When I retire from here, I would like to visit the United States and breathe the ar of wht it stans for - as I remeber it.
I am working hard at being a writer - not sure, at all, of what will happen.
