Paula's Story
Life
Married with one child...livin' in Florida. Immediately after graduating from high school, I transferred with my state job from Juneau to Anchorage. I lived in Anchorage from 1986 to 2000. I met my former spouse in Anchorage, was married for 12 years and we have one 16 y/o son. In 1999, I met my current spouse (he was a Floridian stationed in Anchorage at the Air Force base, Elmendorf), we relocated to Florida, and we married two years ago...and the rest is history. We live in a small city (comparable to the size of Juneau but still close to the bigger city for big city activities) in Florida, our son is a great kid (honor roll student in a gifted-learning school), and we're both enjoy our careers (my husband is a financial advisor, and I am a manager for a public utility). We're actively involved in volunteer activites (board members for the Boys & Girls Club of Manatee County, volunteers for the Sarasota Manatee Association for Horseback Riding Therapy, Bradenton Yacht Club sailing squadren, DeSoto Historical Society, Manatee County School Advisory Committee, etc.) in the community. Our family hobbies are fishing, sailing, waterskiing, tennis, racquetball, music, and reading. We love to go to live concerts (i.e., Dave Mathews Band, Jimmy Buffet, etc.) and to the opera and the local community theatres to watch plays. Life is good!!! : )

Workplace
Current profession: Operations supervisor -- public utility.
I worked for the State of Alaska from 1984 to 2000, working in various agencies in various capacities from administrative manager to welfare caseworker to intake investigator. I worked as a marketing associate for Raymond James and Associates (they own the stadium that is home to the Tampa Bay Bucaneers, and one of my fringe benefits was free tickets for Buc games -- I watched a lot of live football that year) from 2000 to 2001. I then worked for the State of Florida, Department of Juvenile Justice as an administrative manager from 2001 to 2003. I was promoted to my current job at the public utility. I love my job and have a great team of employees. I completed the certified public manager program through the State of Alaska in 1997 and in 2004 was certified as a business examiner through the National Malcolm Baldridge Assessment Program for Business Excellence to audit businesses in the private and public sector to identify gaps in business operations and recommend opportunities for improvement (OFIs). These businesses that are audited then compete for awards if they close up gaps in their business operations and turn their OFIs into strengths. I have learned so much in this program -- the examination criterias can be applied in any setting (personal and professional). I also completed in the 2004-2005 Sarasota Leadership Program as well. I was appointed as a Guardian ad Litem in 2006.
Military
I worked as a civilian for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs for four years at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
