Pete's Story

Life Hello and may God bless you all, the many wonderful classmates, wherever you are now, from all schools attended. I am still alive and hanging in there, and hope you are too. I am doing life at home, retired, in Hesperia, CA, in a baselike setting, and kind of delinquent in keeping up this page to you. Here goes some more stuff, so you know what I am up to, by just offering an account of recent stuff in the life of a desert dude, who is getting ready to doff hat to you in the picture as a greeting. Some Memoirs of Some Stuff in Life Sorry, I am still kind of miffed and slow in some areas in the PC, but I just keep on making some little needed improvements each year, or in my case much needed here and there, in my earthy and incomplete writing style- something like Artemus Ward and his business letter, p. 606, from "Adventures in American Literature," 1961, Harcourt, New York. My life is still like a Sloppy Joe sandwitch every now and then, all slopped up, but still kind of neat. I never have talked much, written much, listened much or read that much, except when I need to, in various time periods. So, now with my scorecard cleared for lapses and whatnot I am ready to proceed with some modest confidence. I was born in East Los Angeles and spent first several years there, and recall many wonderful times, right off of Whittier Blvd. with family. 6/2005: The wife, Evelyn Joyce and I saw Arena Bowl XIX, from Las Vegas, on TV, at home, in '05. One cousin, Troy Bergeron, played in the game for The Georgia Force, 48 Colorado, 51 (6/2005). Some cousins attended the game. Dad and I were going to fly out of John Wayne Airport, Orange County, but he had done a lot that week and I suggested that he just stay at home, in Santa Ana, with Mom and watch it on TV. I sent him a Georgia Force cap for Father's Day in '05. 2005-08: And, in 2008, I spent time with Mom and Dad around Thanksgiving and Christmas '08. Time really flys by, and it is speeding up, now, that I am older, or I'm slowing down. Things that I have not accomplished in life I accept, and am just getting on with daily life, now. I really liked the Navy base and I wished I never left, but am so glad for all the wonderful memories. I still live in the desert, and I try to do my life just like when I was on the base, except as an old boy or old dude, now. My plans are to just stay at home and enjoy the desert weather, each year now, around the home, walking for health in the yard, lawn bowling in the yard, and doing some yard work, is about all, for a good life, combined with good-balanced meals- and, that is about all I can make of this life, besides responsibilities. I would still play marbles, but I am too old, now; but, lawn bowling is where it is at, real popular in Europe, and almost like rolling marbles, and just as healthy, with big marbles. 8/2005: Time rolls on, just like the Mississippi River and we are hopefully, growing old gracefully - at times anyway. The children are all grown. One is named Kristen, because I always liked that name, and one of our classmates back then, was named Kristen, whose relative was on the panel of "What's My Line?" on TV. Anyway, Kristen Bergeron once met Lucille Ball, by knocking on her home door, when she was a child, and later in life she went into TV, too. Kristen has won 10 Emmys in TV and in 2005 was runner-up Photojournalist of the Year in the U.S, in a now almost 20-year career. Kristen lives in Dallas. Another child, Colonel Wayne, Evelyn's son, is in the U.S. Air Force. And, the other 5 children and their spouses, and grandchildren are doing okay too. I live in Hesperia -not, that far from B Mountain, as the crow flies, but closer to Bell Mtn. with all its transmission beacons, where I have driven to the dump on the side of it several times, which is a good thing to do when you get too much worn out big stuff and dump stuff. If any of you want to contact me, feel free, since I am retired, now. I am trying to model my older life, like, when I was young, very youthful, as when on the base in the 1950's. I had some real wholesome years. I still ride a bicycle, besides drive a car and truck, and have baskets on my Sears 10-speed for groceries, whenever I get the urge to bike to the store. 9/2005: Talk about a storm with Hurricane Katrina; my sister lives close to New Orleans, in Folsom, and had many evacuated relatives at her and her husband's place - he is a medical specialist. Two other cousins have made room for many other cousins in Houma and Independence - many cousins have lost their homes in New Orleans and all their belongings, but, all survived. Chris went to Richmond from first to fifth grade and sometimes wonders what happened one of her girl friends there, named Gail Turner. If anybody knows just let me know at your earliest convenience. The relatives are resettled now, mostly on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain. 6/2006: I see that Julie, or Juliana Newman, you must have been in my class many years. I still have my class pictures and I am not sure who you are, exactly, but almost, even though I know I square-danced with you and the rest of the girls. I was the guy with the sandpaper hands, since I spent lots of hours playing in the desert after school. Not, much happening; or too much to say much- Cousin Troy Bergeron is now with the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. Now, I am getting my Dad and myself an Atlanta Falcons Cap. Troy is a 22 year old rookie, after being Rookie of the Year in the AFL, with The Georgia Force- he scored 56 TDs in two years in Arena Football. Daughter Kristen, won some more National Journalism Awards in 2006. Sister Chris is doing well in Lousiana. Colonel Wayne, Eveyln's son, is now in Illinois after being Base Commander at McChord AFB in Seattle; she plans to go visit him soon. And, I am just being a local yokul dude around the residence in Hesperia. I hope all the rest of class is well, and other Richmond students from our time. 10/16/06: I decided going back to grad. school after a 30 years absence at Long Beach St- plan to start in 1/07, but did not. I stay healthy and I think I need some writing practice. 1/11/09: I graduated from Barstow College 12/08 taking online courses that were really good. School I had a real outdoors life on the Navy base and lots of good teachers, at Burroughs, Viewig and Richmond, from 1952-59 -and, all my classmates were real good. Teachers like Mrs. Price, Mrs. Dickenson, Mrs. Baker, Miss Runchey, Mrs. West and Mr. Stokes were good at developing our skills. I enjoyed baseball and camping. I served as an altar boy at the base Church and quansit hut, and at Saint Ann's in Ridgecrest and Inyoken. And,I loved the weekend matinees for 10 cents, admission. My sister and parents and myself lived in a base trailer, and two duplexes on Dewey Street and Michner St. Some of my spelling may be off, so please excuse my writing, like I excuse Artemus Ward- the 19th century writer on the Western Frontier. I applied to law school when 23, but did not get in, but one of my friends from the base graduated from Stanford law school, after Claremont Men's College - Robbie Johnson. Other friends that I recall are Frankie Gagliardi, Bruce Turner, Edmond Anderson, David Hoogerworff, Mike Curtis, Richie Snearly, Jimmie Carr, and, a whole bunch of other good classmates, the Olsen twins, Jimmy Stokes, Jack Pierce, Mark Ross, Russell Dember and Tom Allan; and, the girls were real neat, Joan Fisher, Kristen, Betty, and the rest, some of which I cannot remember their names, since it has been a while ago. I think we had a lot of pretty young ladies in our class back in those days. Now it is time to put some good learning to my wayout life, at times, to just life appreciation and thanksgiving, while I can still enjoy some of the California desert in Hesperia. The seven children of Evelyn and myself are all grown- in there mid-30's or older, now, and fifteen grandchildern are growing up with a few still in high school. I hope you and I keep having a good 4th of July and other days of the year, around any ill days that seem to arise at unexpected times, along the way. Last time I drove to Ridgecrest was in 1996, I saw the Drumond Medical Center. Dr. Drummond used to be my dad's doctor on the base. And, I stood on the Helicoper Medical Landing Platform, then I attended Mass at St. Annes in Ridgecrest. The new Church was being built in back of the old at that time in Ridgecrest. Rob Johnson and I used to be Altar boys there and at the base chapel. In between, and just being kids, I used to like crawling around in the foundation of the Base Chapel when it was being built - that was real fun stuff. He and his dad, Stan Johnson, USMC (R.I.P.) were into mountain climbing and both were in moutain rescue. Rob has been a lawyer in Alaska for well over 20 years; and his mom is retired from the base for several years. So, she is at times visited by her children Joyce who is a teacher in Alaska and Rob, the lawyer, who both graduated from Burroughs H.S. I graduated from the Burroughs H.S. Kindergarden in 1953. Guess what? I ran out of space on life updates so I will continue it here. The Johnson family were Green Bay Packers fans; and, my dad attended the first two Super Bowls in Pasadena watching the Packers. So, cousin Troy Bergeron played wide receiver in all four pre-season games with the Falcons, and the first time he ever touched a football in an NFL game was against The Packers in Green Bay; a 21 yard kickoff return. I thought that was more than quite a coincidence. I will try to give an update here and there, but you can try reaching me if you want at my address in Hesperia. I am under Roland Bergeron. I do not get on the computer very often, because I like you, grew up in the pre-PC computer age. Send me your address and I can send you a Christmas letter this year- an...Expand for more
d Happy Thanksgiving 2006. 4/2007: Now, is 2007 and I am following Arena Football and Georgia just won against Dallas 78-63. Chris Greisen is having a wonderful year at QB and Troy is doing well and caught 3 TDs in the game; and, Chris Jackson 5TDs and Derek Lee 2 TDs. Troy Bergeron was with Atlanta Falcons four months last year and finished with the 2006 season with the Buffalo Bills as a WR. So, much is going on each year. Evelyn is waiting for a call for her Legion of Mary gathering, at Our Lady of the Desert today, in Apple Valley, April 22, so I have to get off the Internet right now, but all is going well. And, I hope each of you alumni of Richmond and other schools, are well also. 10/2008: Now, in 2008, and the Georgia Force had another good year. Evelyn and I went to a couple of Angel games in Anaheim and saw them clinch the pennant versus the Yankees -the Halos had quite a year. We are getting our physical activity in each day, so sports is good motivation. I am back to jock years by practicing good balanced-nutrition. We visited Mom and Dad after the game. I walked and rode to the stadium and back when I was younger, when living at home. I had not seen Baltimore, since the 1966 World Series versus the Dodgers, when Dad gave me tickets to the game, and I took Chris, my sister. All is going well-enough for this time period of life. Lovingly, a friend and buddy, Pete Bergeron College After I left the Navy base with my parents, I boarded '59-61 and graduated from Saint John Bosco School and High School, in Bellflower in '61; then, I attended Mater Dei HS, in Santa Ana, Amherst Collegiate Sophomore HS, in Anaheim, Orange HS, in Orange, and graduated from Servite HS, in Anaheim in '65. I had a roundabout trip, going the distance for a HS diploma. My favorite memories from those schools years is playing, on teams, in basketball and football with the Bosco Braves 8th grade, and Mater Dei Monarchs, just on the 9th & 10th grade C, B and JV teams. I played on some teams with first team All-Americans, and other gifted athletes. I only started about five games. I went out for JV baseball as a freshman, and almost made the team. And I had difficulties like many in class. I was a lot of time attending the dermatogist for face. I wondered why, but it was just adolescence oily-skin. And showing up to class late and being ocasionally in detention after school and on weekends. Yet, all the schools I attended taught me something good. So, it was good to finish the mandatory school years, along with a measure of developing as a human being, no matter how difficult life seemed on occasion. After all, in my case, I have found there is always some good times each year, around some difficulties. I was not on enough teams in high school because coursework and other responsibilities took up too much time. I was involved in coaching after those years and was on 30 teams overall. The first team I was on was the Indians in baseball in the 5th and 6th grade on the base. Then the first football team I was on was in 6th grade at Richmond. If it was allowed, I could have played outdoors forever, but rules are rules and I probably would have just ended-up a sick dude, anyway. Then, after not getting into Dad's alma mater, Whittier College, I had to take an alternate route- because other applicants had done better than I had done in high school- so good for their achievements. And I had college catalogs, and applications from Cal Tech and M.I.T. I figured a little more than my aspirations. In other words, my high school report card would not buy a box of cigars, but I was glad for getting through the high school years. I only had one "A" grade in each of my last two years- in high school in Chemistry, which I took twice, and Physics Lab. So, I graduated from Santa Ana College, Orange Coast College, Antelope Valley College, Victor Valley College, and, Cal State Fullerton with 7 degrees. And, I finished a graduate program at Long Beach State, but did not finish discertation and graduate exams; and, was in a couple of honor societies -and, 8th degree, A.A. at Barstow College 12/08, and making the Dean's List several times, along the way. Now I enjoy re-reading works from college and trying to keep myself in shape, like when I enjoyed sports in high school, but as an old dude, because my doctor gets after me to keep with it, if I start to backslide in various health parameters. So, I find physical activities very important, as I get older. I thought I would be more Jack La Lane oriented this year, but it is already October 2006, and I have not been - at least not really in 2006, but much more so in 2007 and definitely in 2008, nearly all the way. Yet by doctor's orders I am supposed to be, most of the time from here on in, so, I am trying my best and have a good balanced- nutrition, when ready to do some fitness. But, whatever comes my way, health or not, I am ready- especially, after having many obstacles to overcome, like everyone. And, when I report to my doctor, I always try to have a good health report, but he is very firm about it, and he expects it of me- so I'm pretty much keeping on the ball. I thought I would be back at Long Beach State in the Spring Term 2007 after a 30-plus year absence, "Whoops there goes another rubber tree plant" [Frank Sinatra] . Who can stop that ant? And, in my case more of a desert tortoise that keeps moving along at own speed and the rubber tree fell, or some little rocks moved as the tortoise moved down its trail, just in a different direction. I had just planned on one or two graduate-level independent study courses from home, but instead attended Barstow College '07-08 online and took some really important courses. So, everything went well, for I hoped all goes well. And, I really enjoyed the drive through desert to Barstow. Luckily, "All's well that ends well" [Shakespeare], for a simple life in the high desert, in my case, even though wobbily or sloppy at times, I am still getting by, and am doing each day, at an able level. Workplace I am happy with my work record, though it is really ordinary- more out of work time than in work time, which is okay. So, I'm just a humble dude wishing you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 2007-08: A lot happened this year; Evelyn's son, Wayne, was made a USAF One-Star General in September '07, as Wing Commander at Little Rock AFB, AR. Evelyn was at the ceremony of Wayne getting his star and was in a picture with him and his wife in a newspaper. And, Evelyn was made a Great-Grandmother on October '07, to a baby girl who is now walking around this year 12/08. Dad, Ron, attended a wedding of Rebekah to Matt, a Lt. in US Coast Guard, in September '07 in Houma, LA, and is hanging in there with his doctor visits at St. Joesph's Hospital in Orange. And, Mom got a good report from the Doctor's on her health, in November '07 that fluctuated here and there, but fortunately both are doing okay as '09 gets underway. And, Troy Bergeron made 2nd-Team All-AFL, with Georgia Force, in October '07 and did good in '08 as Team won Southern Conference a second year in a row. But, I see the season is cancelled this year. Luckily, Troy has been on 6 pro teams from 19 to 25, so he can enjoy the time in other good pursuits. Evelyn did a Consecration to Mary in December 07, in Victorville, at Holy Innocence Catholic Church, and re-consecrated herself in 12/08. And, Chris, sister, spent Thanksgiving in 11/07 in Santa Ana with her husband, so we all got to be together again, before they returned to Louisiana in '07- and, made a couple visits in '08. One of her horses died at LSU in Baton Rouge, who managed to save her for a while, and the other one was lonely, so she got a retired winning-race horse that has the other happy again. So, here's to a wholesome season and year ahead, for all of us still alive and onboard, I have time to remember many fond memories on life's journey around any sad times. I assume we have all had difficult times, and we get cheered up again and again along the way. During my work years, I worked at places like a car wash, taco stand, department store, warehouse, library, gas station, laundry, stockroom, and aircraft hangars in front-line jobs. I am very thankful for my work hours and work-shifts from earlier years. Military Drafted back in '68 and'71 but failed U. S. Army physical at Army Induction Depot in L. A., like about 1/3 drafted back then, because of disabilities, so, was classified 4-F -and first child, Kristen born a few month later. I received some letters from buddies of Santa Ana College from Viet Nam and Korea, who were in U.S Army back then. And, a cousin from New Orleans visited us in Santa Ana, before shipping out to Viet Nam as a U. S. Marine- alot of good memories and brave young men who fought and served well for good ideals. Also, I am a recovered alcoholic, who has been off drinking for over 50 years. I really liked it, but I drank my quota for a lifetime, and sadly was forced off it and had to quit, or face the likely consequences. So, I spent a week back in 1979 in an alcoholic unit at St. Joesph's Hospital in Orange, and took to feeling blah, more blah and dull much of the time, until I got over the hump to get well. Then, back in 1994, I almost lost all my teeth and the dentist's office saved them, which is really neat- each human has their particular difficulties on the way. We all live with some restrictions and limitations on us all our lives. Who knows, maybe some more government related work like many of us or part-time work? I am really glad I got to write you this story- everything is going okay as can be. I will try and get better at writing, proofreading, and looking at the PC more often if I can- it seems that much comes up, so I do things in spurts. Good day to you, now and in the future days. Pete
