Pete's Story

Life I'm currently working in a school for severely disturbed children. It's a great job, I love the kids, though it's pretty draining work. I wrote a novel, which I stopped trying to get published about two years ago. I'm working on another one now, I'm also applying to MFA programs so I can devote myself entirely to my writing, even if only for two years. I live in Seattle and get back to the east coast about once a year, but will probably return more often since my sister had twins last summer. School I'm just glad I finished public school, even though the journey (ordeal?) took me all the way to Florida before I finally figured out the best thing to do was to drop out. From Our Lady of Sorrows to South Mountain to Jefferson to Maplewood JH to Millburn JH to Millburn HS to Jupiter HS, it all pretty much sucked. Some nice people along the way, but if I had to do it over again I'd rather shave my head with a rusty cheese grater. College College is a very elastic concept for me. I began at Antioch College in 1984, drank my way out in two year, did a quarter at Fairly Ridiculou...Expand for more
s U., then returned to Antioch for more debauchery and lassitude. Dropped out when I had to start borrowing money to pay for it, then decided to educate myself for free for several years before going to Evergreen State College to complete my BA and write two drafts of a novel. Going to college in your thirties is a good way to appreciate the time wasted in one's twenties. Now that I'm almost 40 I've got my sights set on grad school. I work with severely disturbed 1st and 2nd graders now, but I suspect I will end up teaching writing or English at the college level. Workplace Holy smokes, I've had probably close to 100 jobs in my life. Everything from laborer to rock band roadie to film reviewer. Work has not been my passion. The lonest I held a single job was five years, four of them consecutive. That's when I was a cab driver. It's easy to keep your job when you don't have a boss. About a year and a half ago I got my current job working with abused children. It's the first job I've ever had that I really loved. Though I don't see myself staying there more than another year or so.
