Peter's Story

After graduating from Scarborough, I attended William and Mary, finally graduating in January of 1964 with a degree in history. I stayed at William and Mary until June of 1965 when I entered training for the Peace Corps at the University of Texas in Austin. I left with my group for my assignment in Iran in September of '65. I served 2 years as an ESL teacher in the city of Mashhad (NE Iran near Afghanistan). While in Iran, I traveled to most areas of the country as well as to Afghanistan and parts of India. In June of 1967 I completed my assignment and left for Beirut Lebanon. The next 5 days were as close to a war as I have ever come or ever want to come. While the Israelis, Egyptians, Syrians and Jordanians fought it out, we Americans and other foreign nationals were evacuated to Cyprus and other places in the area. I returned home and entered the University of Arizona "Oriental Studies" program. I finished with an M.A. in Oriental Studies (I call it Middle ...Expand for more
East Studies). I returned east to the D.C.area where I worked for American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) for a year. During that time became politically active for the first time by participating in an Anti Vietnam demonstration around the White House. I then migrated to Southern California where I recruited for the Peace Corps and VISTA for 2 years. Then I became an ESL teacher for ELS Language Centers inc. expecting that to be a short run, but it turned into a lifetime. I still sub for them occasionally, but mostly I am an Examiner for the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) which is owned by Cambridge University and run in cooperation with The British Consul, Australian IELTS etc. We are a rival of the TOEFL test run by Educational Testing Services (ETS) of Princeton NJ. I also have maintained my interest in politics. I am currently the treasurer of the Santa Monica Democratic Club and of course involved in the current election campaign.
