Peter's Story

After ERHS, Ended up with College Preparatory Diploma and no desire to attend college. Found employment in downtown Philly on Chestnut Street for almost 12 weeks. Got Laid-off just short of qualifing for unemployment benefits. First question from a propective employer even before, what is your name, was what is your draft status !! Quickly came to realize that I can wait for our Uncle Sam to come for me or I can choose my future enlistment. I chose the U.S.Air Force, they chose electronics for the both of us. As it turn out, this was one of the best thing to happen for my future. Loved every moment of electronics and the Air Force life experience. Was stationed in Hawaii for 1.5 years from 1968 to 1970. LOVED IT !! Since I was engaged to be married, after my tour of duty but finding myself in paradise it only made sense to take a 30 days leave, I came home and married my High School sweetheart (St. Joe H.S.) and brought her to paradise Hawaii for a 6 month honeymoon. Wow, an apartment high up on the side of a mountain over looking Pearl Harbor and from our front porch off to the left the silhouette of Diamond Head. Had many adventures, saw many things. Just ask if interested. This was some of my 1965 thur 1969 Later Pete Class of 65 ERHS Life became very interesting in 1987 when mom and dad decided to retire and sell the family business to their three sons Peter ('65) Richard ('67) and Michael now deceased (in 2006). Dad who was the auditor of a So.Jersey bank came home one day in 19...Expand for more
70 and announced that he and mom have decided to sell the family home and move to Pa. Dad was quiting the bank job becauce he and mom had bought a tourist cave. After the shock wore off I asked a lot of questions like, where are you going to live, in the cave? What have you been smoking? Remember the year was 1970, Woodstock was bearly over by this time. Lastly I stated, you are a conservative banker, didn't you vote for Barry Goldwater in 1964? He finally answered, Peter I go to work at the bank every day and I count other peoples' monies. I certify the books for the bank. He continued, I am tired of counting other people money. I want to come home at night, sit down at my own table and count my own money. Now finally my Dad was making sense to me. Now the first time I went up to Pa. to see for myself what my dad had bought. WOW I no longer thing my dad was a #$%&* case, but now slightly north of brillent. I expected to find a hole in the ground but found instead a little piece of God's heaven on this earth. See for yourself by logging onto ww.woodwardcave.com This property also had the beginnings of a campground in 1971. Fast forward to Oct 1992, Dad dies, Brother Michael who running the business for the family, decides to give up the business and move to Florida. Leaving Peter to sell his house in Atco, Ashland Ave. and pack up the two cats and take over the operation of business. When you think of Peter Burd, take that Edgewood Band trumpet out of my hand and put a flashlight in its place.
