Peter's Story

Not too much to tell from my end of the world. I have been teaching science for 21 years and have taught seventh grade for 18 of those. Ironic that Mrs. Epton was my seventh grade science teacher at Horning Middle School and really got me interested in science. I did visit her at Butler MS like five or six years ago, I think. I asked her if she remembered what she wrote in my 7th grade yearbook (long since gone unfortunately). She didn't. It simply said "Get a haircut!" When I reminded her of that she was embarrassed- probably because my hair is longer today than it was then! I have rarely done what I've been told... On another note, I am very involved with Celtic culture. I love all things Scottish and part of a group that oraganised a new Celtic Festival in Madison, WI. It's called MadCeltFest (.org) and was scheduled for 21 June 2008. If you like Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, Manx or other Celtic cultures, you should have been there. The event was a grand success though I chose to go with Julie to Ohio for a Pagan festival. It was a wonderfully spiritual experience and though it was worth it all, I wish I could have been two places at once. I am Scottish on both side of the genetic ladder. My father wore the Buchanan tartan and my mother was a Gordon. I am the Convener for Clan Gordon in Wisconsin and try to attend as many Highland Games as I can. Julie and I decided to get ourselves something unique for our 22nd anniversary this year. We got a DNA test from the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project (Google it). Julie, of course, could only get her maternal story and chose to have my Y chromosome also tested.I was really surprised when we got our results- our maternal ancestors came the same route over 50,000 years ago. He family ended up in Switzerland and mine in Scotland. For $180 for both of us it was worth it though I was hoping that we could view two different ancestry and routes taken out of Africa. BTW, we are all related to one woman, called the Mitochondrial Eve who survived over 150,000 years ago. Now that's natural selection! Another 'hobby' of mine is historical reenacting. I have a couple of personas but the one I am most known for is my 18th century naturalist character. I enjoy being outside as much as possible. I love to canoe, fish, hunt, hike, camp. I have several flintlock firearms including a Virginia-style longrifle, as well as a Scottish smoothbore (both I which I helped build from scratch), an 18th c .540 caliber pistol and a 17th century-style .50 caliber Scottish Murdoch pistol. Shooting traditional blackpowder is a blast! (pun intended) I have several time-period swords as well. Before you start thinking that I must be some kind of crazed survivalist or something, realise that part of creating living history is having the stuff to go along with it! I wish I...Expand for more
could do more reenacting but going by myself isn't as much fun as it used to be. I've sewn my own clothes, made my own ghillie brogues (basically Scottish sandals), and sheaths for knives. Part of my time being outside is tending my gardens. My yard is about 40 feet across but 420+ feet long. All of the properties along the river in this part of town are similar in proportion. I laid thousands of bricks and brought in hundreds of rocks. I have a small patch of remnant prairie, a rose garden, a small pond, a 30X50 vegetable garden, a stone circle and a huge willow tree by the river that's like being in a cathedral. Having a long, narrow yard gives me the opportunity to create a series of different gardens along the way. I really am happy that there is a 30th class reunion in the works. I'd like to help out with the planning and/or the event itself. I joke that either we haven't had a reunion in a long time (15th?) or the rest of the class doesn't want me there! C'mon you guys! I know you're in there! Guys..? :-) I'm not sure why this particular gathering has taken on so much importance... I'd really like to see some of those once- familiar faces and reminesce about old times. I'm forgetting the details of those days and it would be good to remember them. I wonder how many classmates we've lost along the way. I'd like to find a way to honour them. Remembering and telling those old stories is part of honouring our past. Perhaps it's also about wanting to reclaim at least the essence of our youth... Anything to forget about getting so close to being AARP members. I have been married to a beautiful woman for 22 years. Julie is an accomplished artist and has created three tarot decks. We are both Pagan and celebrate the Cross Quarter days (Autumnal Equinox; Samhain; Winter Solstice; Candlemas; Spring/ Vernal Equinox; Imbolc; Summer Solstice; Lammas). We have two children who are happy souls. Both are very musical- my 21 year old son plays bass upright, electric, acoustic and now six-string guitar (since he was 11) and my daughter who has a wonderful voice and plays violin and drums. Needless to say they get in a lot less trouble than I did. My journey has been pretty uneventful, I suppose. I saved enough money in high school to go to UW- Eau Claire in 1978. I ran out of money (and being a stupid 19 year old wanted to be closer to my then girl friend) decided to work and stay in Waukesha. I went back to school in 1983 at UW- Milwaukee. I started at Eau Claire in botany with an art minor, switched to geology at Milwaukee and started getting really interested in physical anthropology. I could have stayed in school forever, it seems! I never thought about being an educator until 1984 when I went on my vision quest. Long story really short, I was told in no uncertain terms that I was to be a teacher and here I am.
