Phyllis's Story
After graduation, I went to work at GTE as a telephone operator. Married Mike Danko (class of '55) in June of '59. First child (son) born in August of '60.
Mike found work at Martin Marietta in Orlando, FL and in March of '61 I left GTE and we moved to FL. Blessed with three more children after move to FL. - two daughters, one in January of '62, the other February of '63, and in March of '66, a son.
We left Florida for St. Louis in '69 when Mike was offered a position with Emerson Electric. The position evolved into that of an international marketing consultant - defense related - and in November of '70 the family moved to Bangkok, Thailand. What was supposed to be for a period of 2 years was cut short when President Nixon began pulling troops out of Viet Nam and we returned to St. Louis in '71.
During the years in Orlando & St.Louis while the children were growing up and Mike's job was taking him out of the country, I did a lot of sewing - for all of the family, home decoration, gifts, etc.
Mike & I were divorced in 1980. During the years tha...Expand for more
t followed, I've sewed costumes in a theater, done alterations on men's suite in the tailor shop at Sears in St. Louis and worked as a secretary.
Since my children were grown and on their own or away at school, I returned to Johnstown in 1985, hoping to be of some help to my parents as my dad was having a leg amputated.
I sold advertising for a radio station until early 1986 when I found a secretarial job, where I spent the next 20 years until the company was sold (2006)and my work was moved to the main office (in Pgh.) of the new owners.
The secretarial work that I did both in St. Louis and Johnstown were for companies that were related to the construction industry - which I really love - and I am now trying to find something part time in that area.
Mike died in 2003. Our four children have provided me with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. With the exception of our oldest son, who lives in NJ & works for Lockheed Martin, they all live in the St. Louis area.
I'm expecting to attend our next reunion (55th) in the summer of 2011.
