Phyllis's Story

New news. My daughter, Tammy Jo, has moved to Holland, Michigan. She graduated from Walled Lake Central, Class of 1987. I was born and raised in Pontiac. Attended Central Elem, McCarroll Elem, McConnell Elem and Lincoln Jr. and graduated in 1956 from Pontiac High School. I was in the projectionists club with Marion Lehner as class sponsor. I was also in Glee Club. After graduation I went back to high school for another year to take classes I didn't have time for. I worked afternoons at the Board of Education at 40 Patterson Street. The street no longer exists after the looks of South Saginaw changed and Wide Track Drive was built. Evenings and weekends I worked for Krogers. After that year I was hired full time at the Board of Education. When Oakland University was built I took classes at night. Finally, I took a leave of absence and attended Oakland University fulltime. I have a BA and MA in education. After teaching for 36 years I retired in 1995. I worked two summers in the Purchasing Department for Pontiac Motors on Glenwood in Pontiac. The first summer (1965) I worked the night shift. The next summer (1966) I worked days. The extra cash was nice. I have a son (Albert Roy). He graduated from Walled Lake Central. He died December 31, 2008 of an unknown heart condition. My daughter (Tammy Jo) graduated from Walled Lake Central, class of 1987. She has two children, Danny and Katie. I also have two dogs, Maggie and Henry. My husband was a heavy equipment operator for Clawson Concrete for 33 years. He retired in 1996. Because he was an avid fisherman and deer hunter, we bought a place in Lewiston, Michigan on Tee Lake and hunting property between Atlanta and Hillman. He was lucky to marry me because I fished and wanted to deer hunt. Having heads and other trophies on the walls was fine with me as long as I didn't have to dust them! Albert w...Expand for more
as born and raised in Rochester, Michigan. He was in the first class to graduate from the new high school in 1957. He used to hunt pheasant where the hospital is now. We both cruised Woodward and stopped at the local drive in restaurants to see and be seen. We had a lot of the same friends and attended the same parties but didn't meet until the late '60s. In fact, I worked with his sister, Loretta, at Krogers and then with Loretta's sister-in-law at Pontiac motors. They both tried to fix us up. We finally met all on our own. We were married July 1, 1967. We were married 41 years. He was very sick for the past five years with many hospital visits. He died June 3, 2008. We both wanted to have a CLASSIC car but we didn't want the classic '57 Chevy. He was looking to find the 1963 red Ford Convertible he had and I was looking for a jeep. The deal was that which ever we found first would be THE CAR. Well, I found mine first. I have a 1943 World War II jeep and a trailer from the Korean War. Drove it in the Woodard Cruise one year and then took it up north to the cabin and put it in the pole barn. There is less traffic, no traffic lights and lots of trails. Of course, it is a stick shift and 4-wheel drive. Her name is "My Jeep" and she is painted olive drab and has all the numbers and stars painted on. Drive it to town for groceries and such. I missed my 50 year class reunion and that is why I joined Classmates. Hope to reconnect with old friends and make new friendsl. Would love to chat with people who remember all the OLD stuff from Pontiac. One of my favorite memories is being pulled out of bed and taken to watch the fire at Chases Department Store. My brother and I watched from the steps of the old court house on the corner of Saginaw and Huron Streets. If you want to know more, send me a message or an e-mail. Oh, yes, I am a member of the MVPA--Military Vehicle Preservation Association.
