Ralph's Story
Went to Ohio University, joined ROTC and upon graduation in 1968 I was commissioned in the Air Force and went to Moody AFB for Pilot Training. awarded Pilot Wings upon graduation in November of 69 and immediately sent to South East Asia to Fly the Antique A-1E Skyraider. The trip to Nakon Phanom Thailand took six months and included travel to The State of Washington and Florida for Survival training and Water Survival Training then to Hurlburt Field in Fort Walton Beach Fla. for quick check out in the A-1, then off to the Philippines for more Survival school. Made it to Nakon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base in June of 70 and survived a year there. All those schools must have worked. Left in June of 70 for an assignment to Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta Ga. (same place I went to in 68) to be a T-38 Flight Instructor. Summer of 74 I transferred from USAF to the Ohio Air National Guard (A reserve of the Air Force). I was stationed in Springfield Ohio where I still reside. I spent 27 years there in the 178th Fighter Wing. Flew the F-100, A-7D, and the F-16 , I attended the Air War College and The fighter Weapons Schools during my tenure there. s a T-38 Instructor from 2003 to 2010 as a F-16 Flight and ground school instructor teaching both USAF and Dutch Air Force students basic skills in the f-16.
I married the lovely Springfield native Hyacinth Holloway in 1979. Hyacinth goes by the nick name Hyce (Pronounced Hi-C). She was an enlisted member of the Air National Guard and she rose to the highest enlisted rank of Chief Master Sergeant. (she was the first female Chief Master Sergeant in the Ohio National Guard). We have two children: Hyacinth (1981) and Elizabeth (1983). and we still live in Springfield . Our summers are spent at Indian Lake and we try to spend as much time out west in the winter as we can. Hyacinth Schumaker, ( Little Hyce) and her husband Alex live in Lancaster Ca. with two grand children. Hyce and Alex are both OSU alumni, she is a 7th and 8th grade science teacher. Alex attended that school up north to get a Doctorates Degree in Aerospace Engineering with a specialty in propulsion. He is a "Rocket Scientist" at Edwards AFB. Elizabeth is Married to Kris Adams and they live here in Springfield and they have three beautiful children. Beth is a RN at a local hospital and Kris drive a truck for Gordon Foods. Hyce and I spend many happy hours baby sitting grandchildren both here and out in California.
