Ralph's Story

Life Married Gayla Watson (San Fernando High School), Ted Paulson was best man 1961; Son Scott 1963; Son Chris 1967; Divorced 1972 (She couldn't handle the military life ;-); (Bachelor since 1972) Granddaughter Kira 1996 (Scott's). Live in Deer Park, WA. Attended the 50th Van Nuys High School class reunion in 2005... ;-) Sole caregiver for my mother Myone upon passing of my father Ralph from 1990 to 2004 when she passed to heaven at age 89. Am now sole caregiver for my mother's younger sister, Auntie Esther (widowed for 3 years) from 2004 to present. She will be 98 years old 2/15/2014...bedridden for 2 years now but is still in great spirits...she's a DOLL! I tell her that it takes an Army Man to care for little old ladies...she laughs! ;-) Auntie passed to heaven 3/4/2014 at age 98. Getting my Silverado and SPLASH trailer ready for fishing season!!! Footloose and Fancy Free now! ;-) Oops, left foot amputated July 2014...Footless and Fancy Free now! LOL! Just turned 80 years old! Oldest male in 4 generations of my family tree now!!! ;-) School Erie, Pa. Entered school (kindergarten) age 4 (1941), gave boy a bloody nose when he complained I was sitting in his seat...mom was told I was too young to start school ;-); 1943-Tracy Elementary, Miss Wilkins 1st grade, Mrs. Pain (in-the-neck) 2d grade; 1945-Port Orchard Wa. Waterman Elementary 3d grade; 1946-Sepulveda, Ca. Langdon Street Elementary 4th grade; 1947-48 Vinedale Elementary 5th-6th grade (went with mom who taught 3d grade) heart throbs Isabel Gonzales and Carol Vukich, played first "spin-the-bottle" at Susie Taylor's graduation party; 1949-Van Nuys Jr. High (Mustangs) 7th Grade, hung out at Bob's Big Boy Drive In (vanilla cokes); 1950-Robert Fulton Jr. High (Mariners, thanks Ken Brown ;-) 8th-9th grade, met Natalie Wood, a skinny girl with big eyes ;-); 1952-Van Nuys High (Wolves) 10th-12th grade, Doc Harker arranged my attendance at Boys State, Coach Tucker introduced me to football (left tackle), member of the Cafeteers and worked in the Wolves Den making milkshakes, dated DeeDee Roscoe and Ardele Jones; ended with B+ grade average which allowed me to enter UCLA in the fall of 1955... College Started at UCLA, Phi Delta Theta fraternity, ROTC, lettered in Crew, Soccer, Rugby, President of Men's Glee Club (tenor) " Hail to the hills of Westwood...to the mighty sea below...Hail to our Alma Mater...she will conquer every foe...'For we're loyal to the Southland...and her honor we'll uphold...We will gladly give our hearts to thee...to the Blue and to the Gold" ;-) , 1955-58; Took some courses at Antelope Valley College and Monterey Peninsula College (Economics); Finished at UNOmaha (Army Bootstrap Program), BGS, MBA, President of Pen & Sword Society, 1975-76. 'm a mean old man...;-) Accepted into PhD program but decided it was time to support my family ;-) Workplace Investigator/Supervisor with the Retail Credit Company (now Equifax) 1958-68; Active Duty US Army 1968-72; Command Administrative Assistant with the California Army National Guard 1972-75; Management Consulting RW Cuthbert & Associates working with hospitals (efficiency studies) in Iowa & Nebraska 1975-83; Moved to Spokane, WA to look after the folks; Managed a Convenience Store Chain (Zip Trip ;-)1985-1990. Retired, enjoying the 'good' life...2 month long fishing trips to Alaska...25 local lakes for trout and bass ;-) Military Enlisted in California Army National Guard, Pvt. E1 HHB 214th Arty, Van Nuys, CA. June 1955; ROTC Van Nuys High School 1954-55, UCLA 1956-57; Officer Candidate School (OCS), Fort Sill OK 1958 Appointed 2nd Lieutenant; Promoted to First Lieutenant; Commanded HOW Btry, Cavalry Squadron, Burbank, CA; Commanded Btry A 144th Arty, Highland Park, CA, Logistics Officer (S4) HHB 214th Arty, Van Nuys, CA, Promoted to Captain; Attended Officer Career Course at Fort Sill, OK, Volunteered for Active Duty 1967; Commanded Btry A, First Officer Student Battalion (New 2nd Lieutenants from West Point, had to 'chew out' a couple for not shaving properly...they never had to shave their necks under those high collars at West Point...but they're in the Army now! ;-) Fort Sill, OK 1968; Assistant S3 (Operations) 7th Bn 13th Arty, Phu Cat, Vietnam 1968; Battery Commander Btry B 7th Bn 13th Arty, (LZ Pony, 105mm Howitzers) near Bon Son, Vietnam, (my convoy hit a mine, blew up a truck hauling sand bags, next truck was loaded with ammunition...whew! Stenciled "MIGHTY MINE SWEEPER" on my jeep ;-) 1969; Director Forward Observer Training Center (FOTC), First Field Forces, An Khe/Qui Nhon, Vietnam 1969 (trained newly arrived 2nd Lieutenants in the use of the new artillery ammunition, FIRECRACKER & BEEHIVE and how to achieve effective fire in triple canopy forests) 1969; Executive Officer/Commander 2/27th Field Artillery Battalion (105mm Howitzers), Friedberg Germany 1969-71 (Saw the Passion Play, performed every 10 years in 1970, Oberamergau, FRG), Toured Europe but had to avoid sunning areas in the Alps (with the boys...too many bare breasts ;-), Gondola ride in Venice, Walked through the Colliseum in Rome); Director Mortar Committee, Training Command, Fort Ord, CA (Basic Training) 1971-72; Released from active duty 1972, rejoined California Army National Guard, S4 (Logistics) 40th Armored Brigade, Los Angeles CA; Executive Officer 2nd Bn 144th Artillery Battalion, Arcadia, CA; Transferred to Army Reserve (summers at Fort Lee, VA) 1975; Entered Grey Reserves; Retired 1997, permanent grade of Major, received National Defense Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Bronze Star Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Dev.
