Over 50 years in Canada now. Completed a B.A at Nebraska Wesleyan University and then an M.A. at the University of British Columbia.
Spent more than 20 years teaching at a community college mostly in the criminal justice department and volunteering on international human rights missions. Worked in Nicaragua, Fiji, the Philippines, East Timor, Indonesia, and Afghanistan.
Served on the Esquimalt municipal police board for five years before being elected to Esquimalt City Council in 2008 for a three year term. Made two unsuccessful runs for federal parliament, but finished close enough to be tempted to run again... Successful the third time but won by only 1%. Re-elected for a second, third, and fourth term as Member of Parliament for Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke in 2015, in 2019, and it 2021 with increased support each time. y 20% and nearly double the votes of my closest opponent.. Just announced in April 2023 that I will not be seeking re-election in the next federal election.. Looking forward to retirement in a year or so.
From my election in 2011 thru 2015 I served as the Official Opposition New Democratic Party (the social democratic party in Canada) Public Safety spokesperson (on police, prisons, borders, and national security) and our spokesperson on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender issues. Currently I am serving as the NDP Spokesperson on Justice, Defence, and Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression. and sitting on the Justice and National Defence Committees. Priorities now are banning conversion therapy (done), getting better mental health supports for veterans and serving members (still working), and making coercive and controlling behaviour in intimate partner relationships a criminal offence to give us a new tool to address domestic violence.(close to finish line)
