Randy's Story

Life updated Sept. 2013: and updated again in 2017 and 2018 and 2019 Well, I guess it is time to change my bio. After High School I held no job for more than a year. Along the way I got married, managed a drive in theater, worked in hospital security, became a cop which I dearly loved, had a son, worked at a university where I met a lot of great people both staff and students, Some of the students are still my friends today and I had fun there. got divorced, managed over 40 different security accounts with over 100 employees which was very hectic and stressful. I grew and learned a little more with every job and relationship along the way, In 1980 i moved to Mexico, Missouri to become a Public Safety Officer. I describe being a Public Safety Officer as driving around in a police car being a cop until a fire call comes out and then you find the nearest phone booth and change into bunker gear and become a fireman. After the fire is out you then take off the bunker gear (phone booth optional) and become a cop again. This job lasted about eight years until I got hired as a public safety officer at a University back in St. Louis. After three years I was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. I stayed at the university for about nine years until the departments duties were outsourced. I then ended up working as a Branch Manager for the contract security company that got the contract. I held that position in two different companies for about six years (three years apiece). In 2003, due to mergers and administration changes, I became unemployed for the first time in 23 years. After about half a year I was asked by a former co-worker to come to work for him and help him start up the security department for a new hotel. In 2005 I bought a house in Hazelwood and the next year I started working as a dispatcher in that police department and thought that I never should have stayed away from public law enforcement for so long. However, being in law enforcement behind a radio is a lot different than being involved in it on the street. So, after a year I stepped away from it. This allowed me to go into the second of three career paths that I thought in my younger days I wanted to do. At the end of 2007 I became a truck driver. Update Sept. 2013: When I was young there were 3 jobs I thought I wanted to do. Police officer, truck driver, and airline pilot. Well 2 out of 3 isn't to bad and I think it may be too late to become an airline pilot. After police dispatching I went to school to become a truck driver in 2007.. Which allowed me to meet a wonderful woman. I was dedicated to a Walmart distribution center in southern Illinois.. She transferred to Asset Protection and worked the truck gate at the end of the year I started. After about 2 years with her she asked what I thought about her learning to drive and us team driving cross country. We did that from 2010 until 2014 and were in 47 of the 50 states. In 2012 we bought a motor home and started working only every other month and travelling in the motor home the other month. We took it to San Diego for a Marine Corps graduation and we took the wonderful woman's mother to Best Friends animal sanctuary in Utah. Life does have it's ups and downs, but right now it's pretty good. Oh, and I don't think airline pilot has much of a chance of happening at this stage of life. 2017 Update First I removed everything but the country from my location because that is about all I can guarantee. In 2014 I gave up truck driving to become a full time RVer and I guess semi retire at the ripe old age of 59. Last June after my son moved out of it, I even sold my house. We go where we want and work where and when we want. In 2015 it was at an amusement park in Iowa for the summer. In 2016 it was 6 months in Alaska. Then it was selling Pumpkins and Christmas trees in California. Then I visited family before spending the rest of the winter in the warm Arizona desert. After another trip to St. Louis for my son'...Expand for more
s wedding we worked at a campground in Kentucky for about 6 months. With any luck I would like to be working this winter in the Florida Keys. Ahh, life IS good. To expand on our travels a little. We did a short (two week) stint at the sugar beet harvest in North Dakota. At the very end of that my mother went into ICU and we drove 900 miles overnight to get back to St. Louis in time to stay with her the next night and she passed away the next morning. After the funeral and all we headed to our next job with Amazon for the Christmas rush in Coffeyville, KS. that ended on Christmas Eve. Then we went back to the St. Louis area to tie up loose ends. Then the summer of 2015 we worked at Adventureland Amusement Park near Des Moines Iowa. Now I can say more definitely that I am retired since I got my first Social Security payment (7/26/2017). However, I'm sure I will still be working somewhere sometimes when I find a job and place I like. Oh, and all those jobs have covered site rental, electric, water and paid an hourly wage which more than covered food, etc. So, it's like living without any bills. No rent/mortgage and no utilities to pay. June 2018 Update I just realized I mentioned going to Alaska in the last update which required going through Canada and while we were in Arizona we went to Mexico. So, I guess even just USA doesn't quite cover my location either. We didn't make it to the Florida Keys last winter either. Hopefully there is still time. The little woman lost her dad last year. So, we spent most of the winter in Illinois with her mom. We did make the trip to New York. At the end of January we headed to Arizona to work Spring Training for the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals until the end of March. Then we began working for a fellow that rents mobility scooters at car shows and we ended up parking and staying on his property in Tennessee between shows. We are able to live in our motor home on the company property and we help out with washing and maintenance on the scooters while we're here. We have and will be traveling to various car shows either in our motor home or in a company truck with trailer to rent out the scooters. We spent one weekend at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on the infield where a car show was being held. I posted some pictures. We also got to spend some extra time in Pigeon Forge after a car show. Life is still good and there are a lot more places to see, live, and work. 2018 update #2 The Florida Keys was in my future. We thought we would repeat a job for the first time and go back to Arizona for Spring Training. However, fate stepped in. I got an email from the manager of an RV resort in Key West. He had seen our resume on a "Workamping" (Workamping is defined as living in any form of RV or at a campsite and working) website and wanted to know if we would be interested in coming down and working there for the winter. I wanted to go to the keys, this was for eight months in the winter, and he contacted us. So, in the middle of September we arrived to our new home. A very nice site with it's own Tiki Hut. Sites in this resort are actually individually owned, but most are rented out when the owners aren't there. The rent is from about $150-$350 per night, depending on the site. Ours was free, and we were paid for all the hours we worked. It started at $12 per hour and then we got a raise to $13.25. It is now the beginning of May and we are headed back to Illinois and Missouri to spend time with family and friends. Oh, and as for my location, it has gotten even more complicated. While in Key West I had the chance to fly to Cuba for a day. Update 2022 We now own 40 acres in Arizona. It's off grid with no utilities. We can't get our motor home up to it yet due to the "roads." We did buy a small camper that we were able to set up on the property, We also bought a trailer to haul materials up. Of course, we had to get an ATV. Now we have an end loader backhoe that I will be playing with.
