Ray Charles's Story

As of March 2013, I retired from working and I’m currently enjoying spending time with family, playing golf, traveling, and performing community service work. I may start a third career, but right now, I’m enjoying “freedom from stress.” On 22 March 2013 I took an early retirement from the Lockheed Martin Corporation after nearly 14 years working as a Program and Project Manager. During this timeframe, I supported a number of very complex and interesting programs, ranging from building and delivering missiles and torpedoes to the Navy’s Submarine Force to manufacturing surveillance systems for the US Army. With Lockheed Martin, I was in a consistent learning environment and I felt like I was contributing to the National Defense, which kept me motivated. As a Lockheed Martin employee, I was on my second career. In August of 2000, I retired from the U.S. Navy after 31 years of faithful service. I entered the Navy in 1969 and, during my Navy career, I was “blessed” to be able to advance from Seaman Apprentice (E-1) to the rank of Commander (O-5). Over the years, I served on three different submarines and held numerous engineering-related jobs in support of the Navy’s submarine program. I’d say that’s pretty good for a country boy from East Texas☺ In recent years, I have gained a passion for community service work. I am a Life Member of the NAACP and, during the timeframe ...Expand for more
of 2000 through 2007; I was an active member of the Bremerton Washington Branch of the NAACP. With the Bremerton NAACP, I served 1 term as President, 2 terms as 1st Vice President, 4 terms as Education Chair, was the coordinator of a Community-Wide Youth Mentoring Program, and led several Community Education Projects that served disadvantaged youth and adults. I have a passion for education and want to see every youth get their fair shot at having a good life. The Navy was very good to me in regards to education. Through Navy scholarships, I was able to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Southern University and A&M College and a Master’s Degree in Engineering Science from the Navy Postgraduate School. I have also worked towards earning an MBA in Project Management (4 courses from completion). Finding time to complete the MBA has proven to be somewhat difficult, however. Maybe I’ll complete the curriculum after I retire—Not! ☺ I grew up in the small, East Texas town of Palestine, Texas, where I married my high school sweetheart, Gloria. We have three adult children and 9 wonderful grandchildren. If you ask about my favorite hobbies, I will tell you, with a smile, that I enjoy community service and re-designing golf courses…with divots and lost balls☺ I’m not a very good Golfer, but I love the challenges of the game. Anyway -What’s life without a few challenges?
