raymond's Story

Brack Grad 1965. Air Force Special Unit/ Special Forces: Aerospace Rescue &Recovery Squadron. Assisted in recovery of Apollo 10 Astronauts in the Pacific Ocean. Three 90 day tours in Viet Nam jumping from helicopters, often only 2 of us, sometimes in SCUBA GEAR if the Mission was water rescue of American pilots that were shot down. USAF x 4 years: Covered areas from Pago Pago Samoa, to Truk Island, to Saipan Island, Guam, Hawaii, Philippines, Japan, Iwo Jima, Wake Island and Midway Island. After my discharge from the Air Force i had alot of anger issues..I was angry at scumbacks that found ways to escape thier obligation to serve our country.. I remember this "football friend" at Brackenridge. Looking back I now realized that he was a big mouth gutless scum back that was always saying " No guts, No glory". I stay away from scumbacks like him because he was one of the ones that was getting ahead while others like Emile Jackson and the numerous young men were doing their duty. Emile Jackson and many other friends were killed in Viet Nam. I also worked as an RN at Audie Murphy V.A hosp where I had Kurkendal as my patient. He used to play 2nd and 3rd string Full Back in football. By the way , Emile Jackson was killed in Viet Nam.. You could trust him to protect your back.. . There were a lot of good times like when I played 2 years football in the Air Force and was named ALL-CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE BACK .In one football game I made 8 tackles and helped with 15 other tackles. I turned down $500,000 offer for one of my 25 books that Agent wanted to "convert to screen-write, then to screenplay, then to movie". The book that the Agent wanted was about the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron.Told the agent that his offer was not enough. I will leave my 25 manuscripts/books that are currently in a bank vault box. to Teresa my MBA/CPA daughter. I loved my time at Brack. But I was always on the edge of quitting.. I was 9 years old when my parents were divorced.. It was at that time that I experienced the poverty of hunger.. I often went to school hungry.. At the age of 13, I got a summer job as a dishwasher at the Manila Cafe on Broadway. George the Philippino owner saw to it that I had at least one good meal per day.. The summer before my senior year, I worked as a busboy at the St Anthony Hotel.. I saved enough money to make it to Graduation Day from Brack.. But I did not have money to pay for all those pictures at different school functions....There were 2 individuals that gave me hope and encouragement while I was at Brack. First was my grandfather, Domingo Cuellar. He explained that the only way to escape poverty was to continue my education under these very difficult times. And I did it for him.. The second person in my life that influenced me to continue was Mrs Jean Harrison. She was my English teacher.. Out of 4 college prep classes(120 students) in English that she had, she gave three A's on the end-of-semester papers. One of those three A's was for me.. She kept telling me that I had a gift for writing and that I should be a writer.. Mrs Harrison and my grandfather were the beakons of light in an otherwise dark times of poverty for me.. You can ask my childhood friend, David Ramirez ex-Brackette..He knew about my difficult life. Some of you may know him.. I left it all behind when I took charge of my life as an adult...Expand for more
and joined the Air Force.. Etc, etc, etc. About 20 to 30 years ago I was featured in the Sunday Express-News because I was a body builder as well as a successful RN in ICU/CRITICAL CARE UNITS AND BURN UNIT at BAMC as it was known at that time. As an RN I have also worked in The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Wilford Hall Hospital and at BAMC Bone Marrow Transplant Children's Unit. Have also worked with heart transplant, liver transplant units as well as Trauma ICU Units in Odessa Tx, Austin Tx Hospitals, Seguin, JourdantonTx, Corpus Christi Hospitals and McAllen Tx... Ray Garza ( to be continued) Additional Info:IRONMAN AWARDS 1990, 1995, 2003, 2013.( Worked ICU/CRITICAL CARE UNITS/ TRAUMA ONE ICUs/ BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT UNITS) 1990 WORKED 30 DAYS WITHOUT A DAY OFF; 1995 WORKED 64 DAYS WITHOUT A DAY OFF; 2003, 1000 POUNDS SLANTED LEG PRESS, 45 times; 2013, WORKED 34 YEARS WITHOUT A VACATION . Looking back at my career I utilized my photographic memory. Out of 12,000 of my patients only 3 of them died. I have been lucky that I have not contracted Coronovirus. MY LIFE-LONG ATTITUDE = "GIVE ME ANY CHALLENGE" ... RAY GARZA... MY SON, ALL-DISTRICT IN FOOTBALL and U.S. MARINE, including 1 year DESERT STORM, BUSINESS DEGREE; DAUGHTER, ALL DISTRICT AND ALL CITY IN TRACK; ANOTHER DAUGHTER ALL DISTRICT AND ALL CITY IN SOCCER,TEACHES SCIENCE & MATH IN HS. SECOND MARRIAGE DAUGHTER Teresa, (MBA, CPA in DALLAS,) ALL DISTRICT IN BASKETBALL In Ft Worth Tx( she wrote a short book when she was in the 5th grade that won 2nd place in the state of Texas). Yes Teresa was manager of a large Accounting Company in Dallas. Novenber 2021 she handled an account worth 6.4 Billion dollars. Was promoted from manager to PARTNERSHIP. AND ANOTHER DAUGHTER finished college in 19 months majoring in PHYSICS. She was CHEER LEADER 3 YEARS IN JR HIGH AND 3 YEARS IN Ft Worth HIGH SCHOOL=ALL DISTRICT CHEER LEADER... I NEVER HAD TO PUSH THEM. I TOLD THEM TO FOLLOW THEIR HEART AND THEIR DREAM ( in that order) AND GOD WOULD OPEN THE DOOR FOR THEM. ALSO TOLD THEM, WIN OR LOSE, ALWAYS REMAIN HUMBLE.. BEING HUMBLE AND MAINTAINING YOUR HUMILITY ARE ADDITIONAL WAYS OF SHOWING RESPECT FOR YOURSELF AND FOR "GOD".. NO, I DID NOT GO AROUND PREACHING TO MY KIDS OR TO ANYBODY. BUT EVERY YEAR, WHEN THEY WERE BETWEEN 6 AND 11 YEARS OLD, I WOULD SIT THEM IN FRONT OF THE VCR/TV AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO WATCH 2 MOVIES: " LOGAN'S RUN", AND "SOYLENT GREEN". SINCE I WAS TAKING SEVERAL PSYCHOLOGY COURSES I KNEW THAT A PARENT MUST INSTILL THE MOST IMPORTANT VALUES OF LIFE TO A CHILD BEFORE HE OR SHE REACHES 12 YEARS OF AGE.. ANYTHING AFTER 12 years, PEER PRESSURE takes over. .BEING A STRONG PARENT TAKES ALOT OF EMOTIONAL ENERGY.. As the old saying goes, "The proof is in the pudding". And of course GOD is the "TRUE and FINAL JUDGE". I am looking forward to more Challenges... I HAVE HAD QUITE A RIDE!!!. ...RAY GARZA. (My school history: SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE, ST MARY'S UNIVERSITY, INCARNATE WORD UNIVERSITY.) Science Degree, Health Care RN Degree. Almost finished my Aeronautical Engineering Degree. In 1977 my mother in law, OMA gave me advice that served me for the rest of my life, "Ray, a candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long". And I am still here, No Diabetes, No high blood pressure, no heart problems. Have gained 8 pounds in the last 20 years. Good luck everybody.
