Rebecca 's Story

In 1963, I graduated from Cross Keys High School and then entered Young Harris College in the north Georgia mountains. Although it was a 2 year school, I stayed there 3 years before finally graduating. I entered Georgia State University in the fall of 1966 and worked nights at the IRS in Chamblee until 3 AM. I slept about 3 hours and then attended classes in the morning. While there I met John Jones and it was love at first sight. We were married September 9, 1967 and I changed to the day shift at the IRS and night classes at GSU. Our first child, Rebekah Amanda, was born June 25, 1969. I dropped out of school to take care of her. After awhile I returned to GSU but with the arrival on July 12, 1971, of our second child, John Jr., I again dropped out. Academics were never my strong suit anyway. I never knew how y'all were able to do all that reading! We moved to Forest Park and I taught five year old kindergarten. When my daughter started first grade, I returned to school. My in-laws watched the kids so I didn't have to worry about how they were while I was gone. After the December 1977 graduation from GSU, I entered Candler School of Theology at Emory in January 1978. I had just learned that I have several learning disabilities and was given some suggestions on how to cope with "all that reading." It was amazing. I found out I wasn't nearly as dumb as all my teachers, my parents, and most of my friends thought I was. Using this little bit of assistance, I completed the (3 year) Master of Divinity degree in 2½ years in 1980 while being a wife and mother, and serving as the student pastor of Martin's Chapel UMC. I was ordained a deacon and admitted into probationary membership of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1979 and was ordained elder and admitted into full connection in 1981. I then served as associate pastor at Lawrenceville First UMC, senior pastor of Flippen, Greenville, and Woodstock UMCs, was the associate at St. John in Augusta, and pastor of Pierce Memorial, Austell First, Bethlehem, Trinity in Clermont, and finally Hapeville UMC. During my tenures at Flippen and Greenville, I worked on the Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago and I graduated in 1988. At last I was "diagnosed/evaluated" for my learning disabilities and discovered the answers to a lot of my questions about why I seemed so dumb all through school. I wish schools before 1963 had understood disabilities better. Maybe I could have been at the top of the class with the other smart kids. Oh, during the testing and evaluation, I also found that I qualify for MENSA! Me! Can you believe it? I still have a hard time believing those test results. Too bad I had to wait so long to find out I wasn't so dumb after all. Anyway, school finally became fun. Learning became one of my hobbies along with genealogy, crafts, Mexican Train Dominoes, and cards (Spades, Canasta, Hand and Foot, but not Bridge). It has been a long and blessed journey which I could not have taken if it had not been for the support of my beloved husb...Expand for more
and Johnny and my children. Now we, Johnny and I, are dealing with my having to take "incapacity leave" from the pastoral ministry. I loved and was blessed by all that was involved but physicially could no longer keep up with the day to day demands. In 2008 I retired and served as a retired supply at 2 churches and then retired again. So now, I spend my days with Johnny, our 3 dogs, and 1 cat. (Updated: 2 dogs and 1 cat as of 2021) We are enjoying the days we have and are looking forward to real retirement. In the meantime, I hope to reconnect with friends from long ago. You can find me as Becki Jones on Facebook. Hopefully my friends will remember me as a caring and loyal friend.... somewhat of a "prude" maybe but lots of fun. God bless! I always wanted to be a Naval Officer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a crazy idea. As it turns out, they were right; I am crazy. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have family, friends, and agape to be able to deal with the day-to-day routine. I have 2 heros for very different reasons. First: my brother, Joe Duke, Jr., musician, singer, composer, inducted in the Atlanta Area Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989. A sober alcoholic for 23 years before his death. My confidant and advisor in matters of how to deal with people. I married my second hero: Johnny. He has put me on a pedestal from day one and I am a better person because of him. He was the one I wanted to spend my life with and have done so since September 9, 1967. No day goes by without my thanking God for preparing Johnny to put up with me and for allowing him to be a part of my life. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Genorah Walden because she was my great grandmother who died when I was only four. I'd love to ask her about our family history. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the kitchen and add on a guest room. I'd also remodel the hall bath by taking out the tub and making a walk-in shower. (Update: did the shower upgrade in 2020) My dream home would be what I have now plus a guest room and a swimming pool in the back yard. (Update: added pool in 2012) If I won $100 million, I'd give 80 million of it to the Georgia Red Clay Mission, Inc., a non-profit foundation, then give 1 million to each of my kids and 1/2 million to each grandchild, (We have 5), 1/2 of what's left to Johnny and the rest for me. lol My current age is 76. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be decrepit old grandparents. I was so completely right. My best friends would tell you I'm very tenderhearted and passionate about everything, but people who don't know me very well may describe me as defensive because I get so intense when listening to others that the intensity of my personality can be misunderstood as defensiveness. In 10 years, I hope to be healthy. I'm going to get there by doing what my doctors say and by praying everyday. Each day is a day to be treasured. I pray God's blessing on those who took the time to read this. I would love to hear from each of you. The End (for now).
