Reford's Story

[Friend me on Facebook!] So you and I weren't well acquainted in high school? It's understandable! I was a band geek, played in the school orchestra, stood against the wall at dances, studied too much, worked too much, and went to church too much 😉. I was twenty-two and living in the Bay Area before I began to realize I was a human being -- and what might go along with that. Yes, I should add, I immensely enjoyed finding out! And I'm still finding out today. But the fact remains that I was hardly among the popular group in HS. Just the last five years I've begun establishing and re-establishing contact with HS classmates and am enjoying it a lot. I hope I was your friend at USG, back in the day. But, if not, Hi! Let’s finally get better acquainted. My high school was U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City. After graduating from USG in 1962, I attended and graduated from: Oklahoma Baptist Univ (B.A., magna cum laude), San Francisco (Presbyterian) Theological Seminary (M.Div., cum laude, sr. Preaching prize), Princeton Theological Seminary (ABD), and McCormick Theological Seminary (D.Min., with special commendation.). I am an ordained Presbyterian minister, and have spent my life serving in church or church-related positions. I retired officially at age 66 -- though, as you will see below, I did not stay idle long! In addition to OK, I have lived in ID, CA, NJ, TX, KS, AZ, and OH -- where I now live. I have been married twice, and have one child from the first marriage and one from the second -- along with a stepchild. My three children live in CA (one in SoCal, one in NorCal), and PA. Our first grandson was born in March, 2008; and our second was born in May 2010 -- both living in Wine Country of CA. We added our first granddaughter, in Philadelphia, in 2013, and a second from the same daughter, in 2015, who also gave us a third grandson in 2017. Over the years, I have traveled in Europe seventeen times, with a heavy concentration of travel in Germany -- though lately exploring Poland twice, and Central Europe in 2019. Consequently, I have come to speak German fairly fluently. I speak some French too, and have toyed with Polish and Italian. I have been able to visit England, Scotland, Wales, France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Finland. I have been to Israel twice -- most recently in 2014, when we spent ten days on a "Holy Land" tour. We enjoyed the history, the Roman ruins, and of course the opportunity literally to "walk where Jesus walked." In 2009, I and my wife Marilyn spent three weeks in Poland. What an unexpected delight! Especially Krakow -- but also Lublin (near which Marilyn's family once lived, and there are still a few relatives there). We returned in the summer of 2016 -- adding Gdansk to our list of cities visited, and finding one of Marilyn's relatives still farming the 200 year old family farm near Lublin. As before, we also went to Krakow, and enjoyed it as much this time as before -- also taking a one day excursion from Krakow to Zakopane, a picturesque resort town in the Tatra Mountains. I have been associate pastor of two Presbyterian churches, and pastor or senior pastor of five Presbyterian churches over the years. My last pastorate before retirement was First Presbyterian Church, Barberton, OH -- a suburb of Akron, which itself is in the "Greater Cleveland area". I retired from full-time ministry in July, 2010. After a year of retirement, I served for a few months as weekend supply pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield, OH. Then I accepted the position of Interim Pastor at the Milton Presbyterian Church of Rittman, OH -- beginning in October, 2011 and concluding in December, 2012. From October 2013 through August 2020, I served at Goodyear Heights Presbyterian Church in Akron. I began as "Interim Pastor;" but...Expand for more
presbytery asked me to stay on as "Stated Supply Pastor." In August 2020 I left Goodyear Heights Church as “Pastor Emeritus.” I am now in my third retirement! While at Princeton, I also was Chaplain, Chief of Counseling services, and Head of the Religion Department at The Hun School of Princeton -- a private boarding and day school, grades 6-13. I was the only chaplain for a diverse student body made up of Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and whatever. My greatest honor there was given to me on my last day of employment, in 1977 -- as I was about to return to parish ministry. The Jewish parents presented me with a certificate proclaiming me the "Best Jewish Chaplain the Hun School Has Ever Had"! For ten years I served as co-editor of the national newsletter of the Association for Reformed Liturgy & Worship, following that work by six years of service as a member of the national Steering Committee, including three years as Assistant Presiding Member. Hobbies? I love to travel. At home, I enjoy the Cleveland Orchestra and Opera Cleveland. I also enjoy messing around with the computer, and computer social networking sites. When I find time, I will be back on the air as a ham radio operator -- W2HTO. And I may take up the violin again. Notable things? I recall that I was in San Francisco for part of the 1968 "summer of love," and was tear-gassed at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago -- as well as the same in People's Park, Berkeley. At the time, I imagined it was part of my ministerial calling! What would I most like to do? I would love to own a condo and live right smack in the middle of San Francisco till death do us part. Odds are, however, that I will remain Right here in the Akron Ohio area. That is especially true now, since my Philadelphia area daughter forsook that area (which she had said she would never leave) and unexpectedly moved back to the Akron area. And, since she has our three youngest grandchildren, that is an added incentive for us to stay. Reading? Well, aside from numerous religious journals and theological works, I love murder mysteries -- the funny ones. I have read all of several series. But my favorite series has been Janet Evanovich's novels featuring the character Stephanie Plum as a bounty hunter. This series has added attraction for me, since every story is set in Trenton, NJ -- which I knew well at one time, it being only 7 miles from Princeton. I also like "The Great Courses" -- video series from the great professors across the U.S., teaching their most popular courses. And, I still like reading theology. But I no longer want to read the "standard, ordinary" sorts of stuff in that discipline. Rather, I only want to spend my time reading edgy, ground-breaking theology -- the stuff you really can't preach, but really teaches you something new about Christian faith and how to express it. Indeed, I still meet weekly with three friends from varied professions, who also like reading and discussing theology that “is on the edge.” Would I like to be back in OK? Well, I've tried over the years to get some sizable Presbyterian church interested in me -- but never with any success. So I'll just have to be content to come back for the occasional family/friends visit or HS/college reunion. In any event, I think it would be tough going for me in OK, since I am a committed Democrat and theological liberal. Love Hillary and Bernie! Even more, Elizabeth Warren! And I was dedicated to Joe Biden’s victory in 2020 — alongside Kamala Harris. I still love them both! Above all, I am happy to be with Marilyn, the love of my life, and to enjoy our three wonderful children and five fabulous grandchildren with her. Plus, now that I’m re-retired, I can enjoy worshipping with her on Sunday — mostly at the Episcopal church of her choosing, but regularly also with my Presbyterian family of friends.
