Rhonda's Story

Life After graduation, I met my husband, Rob at our place of employment. We dated for 4 years, and married in September of 1997. We have 3 amazing children. 2 sons, Alex and Zach, and 1 daughter, Riley Jean. Zach is a severe asthmatic, and Riley was born with 2 congenital heart defects, as well as Down Syndrome. DS is a chromosomal abnormality caused by the improper splitting of chromosomes during Mitosis. Anyway, you don't get to decide if you are going to be a parent to a chid with a disability, you are chosen. Rob and I worked on movies for years, and we have a few movie credits to our name, and we really enjoyed working on them. However after Riley was born, my focus was directed to understanding Down Syndrome, and I have become an advocate for people with DS. I currently am working hard on a community project promoting acceptance, and being an advocate for people with DS, by creating the Down Syndrome Society of Monroe County. The group is focused on a parent support system, and we basically just try to help each other out. It's a very rewarding and tiring effort. But, it is well worth it. Rob still works on smaller scale movie/film projects, but I bowed out gracefully. I've even decided to return to college to major in Respiratory Therapy, as my middle son, Zach is a severe asthmatic, and Riley has developed Asthma too. MCCC has been WONDERFUL to me. I am so greatful for my daughter, because she has helped me to become focused, and helped me realize there is so much more that I can do. Anyway, I still live in Monroe, and enjoy it. My kids don't go to Jefferson though, they go to Monroe! Which is so much different than what we all experienced at Jefferson! I miss the days hanging out with Candace, Nakia, Dionne, Becky, Angie, Kathy, Todd, Chris, Paul, Tim and anyone I have forgot...Expand for more
to mention. I wasn't super popular, and I wasn't a nobody either. I would like to think of myself as someone who tried to be a friend to everyone. There were quite a few people that I have encountered throughout school that were snobs, prudes, racists, and just plain old mean people. The only thing I can hope for is that those people were able to find some sort of happiness in their lives so that they can enjoy life, rather than hurt people because of their meanness. I enjoyed playing soccer the first year it was introduced at our School! Yes, I played on the guys team, with Cindy Timmins, Kim Ayers, Chrissy Hemmingway, Kristy Shute, and Annette & Nadine Kozlowski - we were some pretty brave girls - and we held our own to the guys, and it was truly an experience, I'll cherish forever! Also, I enjoyed the spring so much because of Track season. I can remember the first time, I broke the school record in the discus throw - what an amazing feeling. I broke that record 18 times throughout my high school career, and this year, after us all being out of school for 14 years, the record was finally broken this past spring. Not too Shabby holding that record for 14 years ... after all records are made to only be broken. My favorite class in HS was Mrs. Cinglie's Creative Writing class. What a class it was to be able to creativly write, and share your work with your peers, and have everyone in class critique your work. I had a new found respect for writers after taking that class. To sum it up at best, I'm glad to have those of you cross my path in life. Be it either in a good or bad way, because without those experiences, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I am so blessed, and I thank God for that every single day. So, I hope each of you are doing well, and take care! ~Hugs~ Rhonda :0)
