Richard's Story
Life
Richard R. Bunbury was born in Havana, Cuba and grew up in Savannah, Georgia, receiving a Bachelors degree in Music Education, magna cum laude from Armstrong State College. Bunbury also holds MasterÂs degrees in Music History and in Organ Performance from the New England Conservatory, as well as a M.A. in Theology and Education from Boston College with distinction. He earned a Ph.D. in Music with major in Music Education and Choral Conducting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Since 1979, he has been Organist and Director of Music at St. Theresa of Avila Parish and Director of Fine Arts in St. Theresa School in West Roxbury, MA, developing a prominent vocal and instrumental music program. He has served as assistant conductor of the Harvard-Radcliffe summer chorus, conductor of the Keene (NH) Chamber Singers, guest conductor of numerous choral and instrumental ensembles, and in 1997 was orchestral Conducting Fellow at the University of Hartford. ruccio GermaniÂs Requiem for September 11. On the college level, he has taught at Simmons College and Bunker Hill Community College. Since 1997 has served on the faculty of The Boston Conservatory, where he teaches in the Music History and Music Education departments, and was recently appointed Associate Professor of Music at Boston University. He carries on an active recital career as an organist and harpsichordist, most recently having given the premiere of Larry BellÂs Liturgical Suite. Bunbury has published articles in practical and scholarly journals and is a contributor to numerous collections and enyclopedias of music including the the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Encyclopedia of African American Music, and the Enclopedia of 20th-Century Music. His book, entitled Sacred Christmas Music, is forthcoming. A singer too, he performed Berlioz Damnation du Faust for performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus for performances in Boston, New York and Europe. He is a featured soloist with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra.
