Richard's Story

I retired from the Florida Department of Transportation June, 2009, after working for 36 years in State Personnel as an analyst and manager. My wife and I are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary this month (July, 2009). We were college sweethearts at the University of Florida after meeting in our Freshman year. We have two sons and 2 grandsons. I served in the Army in Alaska from 1968 to 1970. We love to travel to New England and the Northeast especially in fall when the brilliant colors are their best. We love the history, architecture, climate, atmosphere, scenery and seafood. I come by my love for New England naturally. I was born in Marblehead and lived in Topsfield, Massachusetts until I was 12 when my parents moved to Miami. Talk about culture shock! I loved my childhood home and still think Topsfield was a great place to grow up. It is the quintesential New England small town and only about 30 minutes north of Boston (at the age of 6 -12 years old, a world away), and seemed ideal for me. What I find curious is how much my wife has come to love the Northeast too. She is a native Floridian from Orlando (pre-Disney)and has no connection to the area other than through our trips there. If it hadn't been for college we wouldn't have crossed paths. Strange how little things change or make your future. Our first year and a half of marriage was in Anchorage, Alaska compliments of the US Army; which was a great place to be in 1969-70 rather than the alternative available in a very warm climate with hostile neighbors in Southeast Asia. Back to college for me after the chilly north to finish my business management degree. Another seemingly minor decision led me to work for the University of Florida in their personnel office. Little did I know then that would lead to a career in personnel administration and human resource management for the State of Florida. My wife is a retired secondary education teacher of English/language arts and social studies. We have lived in Tallahassee since 1977, hopefully growing old gracefully. I look back at my time at Palmetto H.S. and Cutler Ridge Jr High with a mixture of nostalgia and wonder. We were on top of the world then (at least we thought we were), yet so much was to happen to everyone (including us) during the 1960's. It was a time of social upheaval, changing of the guard, loss of innocence and world changing events. What a time to be a teenager/young adult and to come of age then. I can hear a piece of music from the sixties and remember what was going on then. Most of the time, it brings happy thoughts and memories. But once in a while, it brings on a case of the "mully gru...Expand for more
bs" and a bit of sadness and reflection on the changes that made so much difference in our lives and that of our country. I admit to being a bit of a romantic and harboring nostalgic thoughts of times past, but what is, IS. Update — July 2022 Just reviewed this for the first time in a couple of years and thought I would add some additional details from the last 13 years. Not a lot has changed in the intervening time. Still happily married and will be celebrating a quiet 53rd anniversary with Margie (where has all that time gone?) this month. Built a retirement home 12 years ago suited to aging in place and with appropriate features to accommodate our aging bodies. I still manage to do the yard work with a smaller area to care for. We have been able to take up something we never dreamed of being possible in our younger years - cruising. Between 2015 and 2019 we have experienced 6 ocean cruises and 2 river cruises. As such we have seen a lot of Europe and the Eastern Caribbean and a trans Atlantic cruise. Unfortunately, for the world (and us) the COVID 19 pandemic hit and shut down most everything including our cruise plans for late 2019 through 2021 and resulted in many cancellations. In the meantime, we hunkered down, got all the immunization shots available, and went into a self directed quarantine for the duration. We never venture out in public without being fully masked, use plenty of hand sanitizer and wash hands at every opportunity. A bit obsessive, but so far so good, both of us are COVID free and are doing our best to stay that way. We have finally started to cruise again and had several cruises’ worth of future cruise credits that needed to be used up before they expired. To make a long story shorter, in May we took our 1st cruise since 2019 to the Great Lakes aboard Viking Cruise lines new Expedition ship the Octantis. It was for 8 days (Milwaukee to Toronto) and sailed on 4 of the 5 lakes - Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. Other than unseasonably windy and cool weather, it was a great opportunity to see some places in the US and southern Canada that we probably would never go otherwise. Next up is a 15 day cruise in September on the Viking Mississippi, their brand new river ship. We will be sailing from St Paul to New Orleans. The last one for this year in November will be aboard the Viking Star for a western Caribbean tour round trip from Ft Lauderdale with entry to the Panama Canal. We are great fans of Viking and love their smaller ocean ships. They suit our needs and likes to a “T”. If you happen to habituate “Cruise Critic” on line, you will see us as “Senior Gators”in the different Viking posts and roll calls.
