Richard's Story

It all started one dark and stormy night, in a log cabin deep in the treacherous mountains of... (Gotta admit ~ sounds better than 'Once Upon a Time', although I considered it.) I began my formal education at the tender age of five (1956), at Hawthorne elementary, K to 2nd, there in Seattle, Washington.. Third Grade was at Millikan, in Santa Clara, CA, Fourth through Fifth at Lester E. Shields and Sixth and Seventh at Pala, both E. San Jose, CA. The first half of Eighth grade was at the new school, just a block from my house (one block less than Pala), Sheppard Middle School. During the 2-week X-mas break my mom packed us kids up and moved us to her parents house on Yacht Club Blvd., Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. That's where I spent the last half of my Eighth year and Ninth at DeLaura, there in Satellite Beach, next door to the High School.. Sophomore got me into Satellite Beach High. I came to be an all around un-sung all-star athlete, Got picked for all the best positions for my [then] various talents. I also formed my first rock band and learned the basics of the guitar. Graduation 1967 marked a change in my life. Got to missing California, so It was after then that I requested to be sent back to California to live with my Dad. I did my Junior and a small part of my Senior years at Oak Grove High on Blossom Hill Rd. S. San Jose, CA. This is where I met the girl I would first marry. Donna Marie Jacques. Best time of my life. After some trial-and-error formed a band with Steve Hill leading us to a win of the battle of the bands at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds and a subsequent invite to play the last day of Silver Creek High School's Summer break. Yeah!!!! Got my 15 minutes of fame. I stepped away from school in November, 1968. My scheduled grad year would have been in 1969. So, the following year I was coaxed to go into the Military (by my future Mother-in-Law), so I would be able to better support my soon-to-be-wife, first-born and do a little growing up. It was the I earned my GED within the first week of Basic Training, and with no forewarning, prep or study scored in the top 35% Nationwide and in the top 10% in Mathematics, (I can still take a test.) through USAFE (United States Armed Forces Education), August 1970. Just 5 nights of SAT-type Tests and that was that. If'n I had known it to be that easy I would have dun-dood it a few years earlier. In Sixth Grade I had a 10.2 (10th grade level) and in 10th grade I jumped to 14.4 (still 4 years ahead (and I never did homework, except on the bus before school and after school and maybe at lunch hour. Never at home. That was "mischief" time)). I turned down the offer to attend OCS. Could not see a life-long future with the Military. (Four-and-a-quarter years was all I could stands and I could stands no more.) Still, my IQ score was high enough to keep me in an office and ...Expand for more
out of the field and guard duty (most of the time). And the after-service benefits are great. VA has taken very good care of this old man, being a Viet Nam Era vet and all. (Although I scored and was assigned to Germany. I've been married 5 times. Finally found one that won't put up with my BS (just celebrated our 20th) Yep. Married on February 6th, 2003. Anniversary on the 6th, her birthday is on the 10th, and 4 days after that is [whoopee] 'Valentines'. Made a mistake by giving Gaylene all 3 cards on the same day. All I can say is I learned one more thing about the all-mysterious female gender. Never did it again. Now that our 'flower-eating' cat is gone I've been buying flowers a bit more often. (We're thinking about getting a skunk.) My first marriage to Donna produced a son and a daughter. My second wife and I had a boy. My third wife came ready with a boy and girl. My 4th wife fixed that concern long before me. And my last, and best love, is Gaylene. I refer to her as my "Trophy Wife". Both of us are well beyond making any more tax deductions. I'll be turning (to my pleasant surprise) 72, and Gaylene has seen her 80th. My fondest memories of Satellite Beach and Oak Grove were the friends I made and the garage bands I was part of. Won a 3-day Battle of the Bands as "Mystic Haze" at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds during the Silver Creek High School Arts fair. From there we were also invited to play on the last day of school at Silver Creek. HEY! I was a Rock Star (my 15 minutes [literally] of fame. Continued to play until 1987 in one form or another. Solo, informal gigs after that. And I "Still" can't carry a tune (for those who have heard me.) Nowadays I just collect music (over 1,000 CDs); musical equipment (got my first 'real' Strat, cherry red sparkle) and Sheet Music, which I copy and put on a disc to sell.. Did a stint in the Army as a clerk between 1970-1974. Two years in Germany and two years at Fort Ord, in the same building I took my Basic at. What were the odds. The VA has been taking care of me ever since. Fixed my cancers, my eyes, and have kept this old man upright and above ground. Not as strong and as athletic as I was in HS, but still think I am, until I move and my arthritis sez, "No way, bub". I've lived in Santa Clara County, CA; Indian Harbour Beach, Brevard County, FL; Warton Barracks, Germany; Shreveport, LA; Seattle/Renton, King County, WA; Ft. Ord/Marina, CA; El Dorado County. Anyways, if'n ya' got this far, check out my photo albums. A lot of my story, my families, my friends are pictured there. Enjoy, and hope to re-connect with one or more of my BFFs of Yore. If'n you 'member me, hit the "Remember" button. My father once imparted a wee bit of wisdom to me when I was younger... "It is easier for a thousand people to know me than it is for me to know a thousand people."
