Richard's Story
Military
I joined the Air Force in June of 1976.
I got married in September of 1976, between my first tech school (Personnel) and my first assignment. Four months later, we were expecting our first baby. That pretty much squelched my "see the world" vision, since it was very important to me to stay near my family.
My first assignment was in the base personnel offices at Grissom AFB in Indiana. After that, retrained into computer programming.
As part of my retraining/re-enlistment process, I got an assignment to the Air Force Military Personnel Center (AFMPC) at Randolph AFB, TX. I spent the next seven years updating and developing systems to apply promotions Air Force-wide. We also had two more children.
In 1987, I left the Air Force. Despites some people's insistance that I wouldn't last six months and I'd be back, I never returned.

eady means of supporting my family while I was "growing up." I learned that there were different ways of living than what I was used to. It also provided me training in a good career field which continued to support us after my separation.
Post-military.
I went to work for a savings association in Kansas in April 1987. After 8 months, I had received two promotions and was the Programming manager and a vice president. Then, in April, 1988, a service bureau bought out the computer processing.
In July 1988, I took a job with a service bureau (different one) at a bank in Terre Haute, so we could move back to Indiana.
In May, 1991, I went to work for a manufacturing company in Terre Haute. In 1998, that company was sold. The new company kept me on to maintain our old systems, until everything was converted to their computers.
In October of 1999, I took a job with a manufacturing company in Madison, Indiana.
