Richard's Story
KGHS was good to me - I appreciate the teachers who worked hard and taught well. After graduation I attended Brigham Young University - what a change - 27,000 students and unlimited opportunities to learn and work and so forth. I met my wife there (she graduated in 1970 with a degree in home ec. education). I graduated in 1971 with a degree in PE and a zoology minor. Taught 2 years at King George Elementary (unfortunately, it was a miserable 2 years as I was out of my element and the administration was abysmal). The biology position at KGHS saved me and I taught 3 years there and coached with Buddy Updike. But the advanced degrees I planned for beckoned me and I left for BYU again (this time with 2 kids and 1 on the way).
I earned my masters there and was preparing to attend University of Iowa for my PhD in exercise physiology (cardiac rehabilitation was the goal) but resources were limited and now we had 4 children. So, after some tough decision making I went back to public education and landed in the tiny town of Panaca, Nevada. This county (Lincoln County) is 15,000 square miles with 4,000 people. There are still cowboys here (wiry, rugged, and very hard working). Wide open spaces, clean air, and beautiful night skies.
I am still here 30 years later. All 7 children (and we would have loved to have more....) are now married and doing we...Expand for more
ll - 1 medical doctor, 1 doctor of pharmacy, 1 biostatistician, 1 doctor of optometry, 1 teacher, 1 construction manager, and 1 in college. Since the 2 oldest live here in our county (which we never expected) we get free prescriptions and doctor care (now that's a bonus at our age!). We have 18 grandchildren and I have even taught one of them.
This little town was a haven from much of the world and what a great place to raise a family. I have taught biology, chemistry, physics, math, and now teach middle school science (I love the 7th and 8th grade kids). I have coached football (assistant and JV), basketball as assistant and JV (from1978 to 2004), and track (state champs 3 years in a row, 1991 to 1993). Tired of bus rides which caused sore backs and migraines, I gave up coaching (my last son graduated also).
I have one more year and I'll retire. I garden, do lots of church work, read, play basketball (still), and love to visit my kids when I can. I have ventured into business as my 2 sons who are here and I own a laundromat - it's a money pit.....sigh....not enough of a population to fully support it. Oh well, I should have stuck to education.
So, all in all, my life has been wonderful - a great marriage (due mostly to my wife) of 38 years, a happy family, a rewarding career (I love my work), and a peaceful place to live. We are happy.
