âPolitically, as Brink Lindsey has diagnosed, the coincidence of wealth with toleration has led to the bizarre paradox of a conservative movement that embraces economic change but hates its social consequences and a liberal movement that loves the social consequences but hates the economic source from which they come. âOne side denounced capitalism but gobbled up its fruits; the other cursed the fruits while defending the system that bore them.âââMatt Ridley, THE RATIONAL OPTIMIST, c. iii âThe Manufacture of Virtue: Barter, Trust and Rules after 50,000 Years Agoâ
When we look at exceptional athletes, what lessons can we apply to our own lives? What is different from the way we live our lives?
⢠They know their mission
⢠They simplify their lives to achieve their mission
⢠Their mistakes are visible
⢠They change as a result of their mistakes

We all hate poverty, war, and injustice,
Unlike the rest of you squares.

High goals require a purpose for every workout.
- Joe Friel
Training is a path in itself, not just a means to an end, the end being a race. Training lets us take control of our lives, to do quality work on a daily basis, to create health and strength in our bodies and to build positive habits and routines that make us happy. Training also gets us prepared to execute our larger dream goals. Optimal training requires dedication, planning and a commitment to being our best as much as possible.
- Lucy Smith
If you want to do things right, you must think about them constantly. They have to be part of your consciousness. You make mistakes when youâre tired or distracted, or doing one thing while thinking about something else. Look around you in a restaurant. People are eating as if theyâve never eaten before and will never eat again. If we all just considered it for a minute, we wouldnât eat the 1,500 caloriesâ worth of french fries that come with the tuna wrap.
As soon as I stopped thinking, I started giving back the gains I had made. I blew off interval workouts in favour of just rolling. My weight crept up, and I was soon getting my ass kicked by riders I had been dropping. Consciousness is hard work. And try as I might, sometimes itâs easier to just spin or to eat the damn cookie than to think about the downstream consequences.

I am the biggest weather whiner there isâI know this. My history of being beaten like a red-headed, rented mule (boom go the metaphors) when it comes to Mother Nature is long and absurd...Expand for more

We all have come up with enormous goals and training schedules, and seem to share in that cringeworthy moment when you can see things stacking up against you, and get that sinking feeling that a key workout or planned session is going to get tanked because of things you canât control. Itâs frustrating, helpless, and just plain old miserable.
We spend our athletic lives coming up with plans that tac[i]tly assume one thing: That everything is going to go exactly according to plan. Which of course as we all [k]no[w] never, ever happens.
Just roll with it. Since Katie has been born, Iâve been struggling with the amount of flexibility Iâve had to learn in terms of day-to-day, hour-to-hour, and often minute-to-minute life. I donât know if Iâve had a single day in the past 4 years that has gone the way I expected. Workouts get blown off, meetings get blown up, Katie melts down, you name itâthatâs life.
Out of all of the advice Iâve received about trying to find balance as a parent, one phrase has stayed with me because it applies to everything that we do as athletes: You have complete control when you accept the fact that you have no control.

I was much too far out all my life,

Sorry that's kind of a downer. Here're some quotes from favourite movies:
I've got a dragon here, and I know how to use it!
- Shrek
For a guy with no principles, sometimes you act kind of peculiar.
- Last Man Standing
âHow many [Starfighters] are left?â
âIncluding yourself?â
âYeah!â
âOne!â
- The Last Starfighter
Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now, ride, ride for ruin and the world's ending!
- The Return of the King
Good people of Oz, this is positively the finest exhibition ever to be shownâyesâwellâbe that as it mayâI, your Wizard par ardua ad alta, am about to embark upon a hazardous and technically unexplainable journey into the outer stratosphere to confer, converse, and otherwise hob-nob with my brother wizards.
- The Wizard of Oz
From a TV programme:
Lord Palmerdale: âAre you in charge here?â
The Fourth Doctor: âNo, but I'm full of ideas!â
- "Horror of Fang Rock" (1977), Doctor Who
And from some songs:
And you can trust me not to think
And not to sleep around
If you don't expect too much from me
You might not be let down
- Doug Hopkins
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass

Finally, my favourite quotations from Gibbon:
The city was repeatedly visited or assaulted by captains of the guards, and dukes or exarchs of high dignity or secret trust
His slow and cautious speech seldom declared the deep purposes of his soul; he disdained to imitate the luxury of the vanquished, but he indulged the sterner passions of anger and revenge. The ambition of Genseric was without bounds and without scruples, and the warrior could dexterously employ the dark engines of policy to solicit the allies who might be useful to his success, or to scatter among his enemies the seeds of hatred and contention.".
More about Richard:"I'm a very lucky guy.
A somewhat chunky Ironman, well into late middle age, with a wonderful daughter, a great relationship, & an enjoyable job. I usually don't think I deserve this. :-) Heck, I KNOW I don't. :-) Should add that I have no real sense of humour.".
