Richard's Story

When I returned from Vietnam, I worked at Irving Trust Co until the hostile take over in 1988. In 1991 I started to work for Rivertower, 40 story highrise rental in Manhattan, and am presently the Assistant Building Manager. I have been married to Charlene for 34 years and we have two sons, Andrew 26 who is a staff accountant at Macklowe Management., and Paul Michael who would have been 23. He died when he was 16 from an undected heart problem. He was a great photographer and his camera is one of those that you see in cowboy movies with the guy under a cover to take the picture. Andrew is now 31 and works for Silverstein Peroperties. He is the head of accounts receivable and was put in there to straighten it out and then he can return to the Treasury Division. He was promoted to the director of accounts receivable for the company. Charlene and I are very proud of both of our boys. I am the Commander of American Legion Post #1 in Leonia, NJ(also post #1 in NJ), I am the Scoutmaster Emeritus and Keeper of the Fire for Boy Scout Troop 71 and I am the camping chairman for BSA Tantaqua District for Northern NJ Council. I am a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Minister of the Eucharist and a member of the Bereavement Ministry at my church. I am a staunch supporter of making sure that the community does not forget our POW/MIA's. I attend every walk, demonstration etc in the state and some outside. Every year in September I spend 24 hours in a bamboo cage in front of the Post to draw attention to the plight of our POW/MIA's and their families. I was also the Bergen County Commander of the Sons of the AMerican Legion 2017 to 2019. I am presently the Bergen County American Legion Children Organ Transplant Association Chairman and the Oratorical Contest Chairman. I am also the District One Oratorical Contest Chairman for the American Legion Department of New Jersey. In 2013 , with a great Committee, was my honor and privilege to start Cub Scout Pack 71 in Leonia, NJ. In my spare time I keep a very active conversation going with alot of buddies from USS Shangri-La, my most favorite aircraft carrier that I have had the prviliage to serve on. I live in Leonia NJ and love the great outdoors and Atlantic City. March, 2010-The building where I worked has been sold and brought in their own mangement team to run it. I got a decent package and am living on umemployment until August when I will probably go for Social Security. I am still actively ooking for a job as I feel I am too young to retire. If anyone has knowledge of a position in building management, please let me know, also I am ready and willing to just talk to anyone about business to get my foot in the door. Thanks inAll you folks that remember me drop a line just to say hello. I was a ble to catch up with Phil Gannon recently and talked about Douglaston alot. Anyone out there from Phi Alpha Sigma, Alpha Nu, please drop me a line. In the last year or so I have become a member of the bereavement committee at my church ot help folks deal with the loss of their loved ones. I am now the Adjutant of the Bergen County Sons of the American Legion continue to be a proponent of Veterans Rights. I am still looking for a job, but am becoming discouraged, at the lack of response to my resume and interviews. Discrimination against Senior Citizens is alive and well in our country. PHI ALPHA SIGMA-ALPHA NU Members ARE YOU THERE, LET ME KNOW. November 20, 2012 truck went through a red light hit my car broadside and really did a job on my health. I am seeing...Expand for more
doctors 4 times a week and trying to avoid knee and shoulder surgery. It is nice to be back to the sciences of Chiropratic and Acupuncture. I can't believe I am still under a doctors care after all this time. For the first time in my life I missed going to Mass on Christmas to hear Charlene sing. Praying a lot to be able to serve Mass, go hiking and camping with the Scouts and do all those important things I used to do for Veterans and cannot do now because of he accident. 19 months later and I am just barely 50% to normal. Had to resign from the board of the NJ Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Annual Ride to raise money for the Memorial as I cannot drive more than 25-30 minutes without stopping and walk around for 10-15 minutes and then back to the car. Looks like surgery is in the near future. Observing the 14th anniversary of our Son Paul Michael's passing. Had breakfast at IHOP, his favorite. Put flowers on his grave and heading out to the GWB site of his many photographic sessions On July 9th, 2015 I had my 3rd operation connected to the accident. I had two discs replaced in my neck and am pretty good. Due to the fact that they due the operation is done from the front of the neck and everything is moved o the side, I had trouble with non liquid food for a week and another two weeks I ate very soft food. You can't believe how happy I was to eat pancakes. Have started on other foods now, but am not back to meat. The carnivor in me is dying. In a short time, we will b moving on to my back and knees.. May 2017- was given the honor to be installed as the Commander of the Bergen County Sons of the American Legion.. Always a very busy time of the year for Veteran activities associated with Memorial Day much more than the rest of the year. As we enter this time of remembrance, p,ease remember those who gave you that great gift of Freedom by giving the greatest of sacrifices. PLEASE REMEMBER THEM. On July 10th I went in for a replacement of my left knee. Surgery was very good, was home in four days. 1 1/2 hours after being home had trouble catching my breath, called 911. Back in the hospital turns out my lungs are full of blood clots.. Doctor said had we waited, I may not have survived. Five days later I am home. It has been 8 weeks, I am doing real well in PT despite my setback. Started driving locally this week. Just very happy to be here. Always thankful to get up in the morning. It has been a year since my open heart surgery (3/07/2019)for a valve replacement. I am doing great. That was the Sixth Major surgery in seven years. I really kicking butt. 4/4/2020 I hope all of you are well and getting through these terrible times. BESAFE OUT THERE. 12/22-1/23. We were in LA for Christmas and New Years. Our Son Andrew has been pushing for us to move to CA. We looked at a few apartments in Pasadena. As we had had almost no family close by on the East Coast we decided to move out here. We went crazy getting the house ready for sale. We sold the house in a week and got want we wanted for it. We signed on August 28th and were on the plane on August 29th. We have A large 1 bedroom apartment with a den, large front room and kitchen. We are so centrally located, we gave up the car. Everything is within 1.6 miles an easy walk. Other things further away we From 1-2 metro stops away. Metro cheaper than NYC. We can ride from Pasadena to Long Beach for $1.75. We have a great view of the pool deck, Central Park across the street and views of some wonderful Palm Trees. We love it here. Have yet to wear long pants.
