Richard's Story
School
I attended Willard Elementary School for Kindergarten and First Grade. I lived on Holden Wood Road, next to the Gordon Adler and behind Nancy Lewis. My father was teaching at the Harvard Business School. I have a Kindergarten picture - the only people I recognize are Gordon Adler, Nancy Lewis and John Solow. I have been in e-mail contact with Annalee Saxinian who teaches at Berkeley and has written a great book comparing Silicon Valley and Route 128.

Then my father took a job at Yale and we moved to New Haven, where I attended Worthing-Hooker through 6th grade. Then I attended Hamden Hall.
In 1969-1969, my father was on Johnson's Council of Economic Advisors and we moved back to the DC area. I attended Thomas W. Pyle Middle School. eger but was to intimidated to ever have a conversation. Johnson's decision to not run for re-election meant my family moved back to New Haven. I attended Hamden Hall for the remaining 3 years of high school.
I went to Oberlin in 1972 - majored in Mathematics and Economics. I met my current wife, Carol, in my senior year. After college, I went to graduate school in Economics at Princeton. I recieved my PhD in Economics in 1983. My original research areas were theory and public finance.

Workplace
I have been teaching at University of Illinois at Chicago since
1982. I enjoy my colleagues and love Chicago. My current work focuses on substance abuse and environmental issues.
