Richard's Story

Well, as you may remember, I and another student were kicked out a little while before graduation in 1963. We were told it was for "spreading discontent!?" My parents did not understand. I have often wondered what you-all were told, what you thought at the time or was surmised or rumored. Tell me please... especially in light of the following: A while back I had occasion to write my fellow truant, though we had not conversed for 45 years, and after the initial paragraph which isn't pertinent, I wrote the following which I wish you to know and possibly reply accordingly. *********** It came about that in the mid-70's, one afternoon at work writing advertising copy, I blindingly and suddenly recalled an experience I had evidently repressed from over ten years before while a student with you at yhe Seminary. I clearly remembered my "spiritual adviser" took me out of Study Hall for a walk and talk. This was not the first time he rescued me from the boredom of Study Hall. It was a warm spring evening and we strolled down the back drive towards the Stations Of The Cross which were set in the woods near the cemetery. He remarked on my "strong back and shoulders" and then moved on to discuss "my problem" which was "excessive" self abuse. He had brought along a blanket. He steered me up the side of a small hill and halfway stopped and spread out the blanket. We sat together on it. We could look down on one of the Stations, a rustic cross with a carved legend disappearing in the increasing dark. He explained that a physical condition with an improperly performed circumcision could cause a stimulating sensation that might lead to "my problem." He proposed to check my equipment, to see if that was the case, and started to help me loose my pants and pull them down. He went in that direction to check things out. In two seconds I freaked and anxiously, stutteringly exclaimed that we had to go back to the Study Hall and no I didn't want to go further. He hesitantly complied. I can't remember what he told me on the way back. By the time I got back to the buildings, it wan't on my mind. I didn't think a...Expand for more
bout the next day or thereafter. Then years later it appears and plays clearly like a movie. I can see now over a lifetime how this really has screwed up a lot of things for me in relations with people, the meaning and appreciation of intimacy, and the deep alienating effects of Catholic/Christian hypocrisy. It was an abuse of one ignorant and innocent; a terrible thing, though not unusual. A few weeks after this event you and I were expelled--€“kicked out we said--€“for spreading discontent they said. I wonder if the counselor/priest, with superficial guilt, confessed his transgression to another priest and of course they had to rid him of the temptation? I wonder why, specifically, you were included? I wonder how much predation and perversity existed among the priests and brothers? I wonder what other boys were involved? This priest was the student recruiter for the seminary. I also remember how I broke the rules more than anyone and thought I was special enough that it didn't matter; going off property for cigarettes, taking walks alone to smoke, stealing into the food locker and out with fruits and sweets, even getting into the wine and beer closet and copping a few. We climbed the water tower that one night, remember? We walked it's circle and spoke of the distant city lights on the horizon. We signed our names on the wall of the tank. Was it an accumulation of venial sins? Somewhere between then and my repressed revelation I had heard we were expelled because a freshman with a telescope saw our names on the water tower and squealed. Is that why we were dismissed? Did we write them on the far side, though? Guess I'll never know. I contacted the priest at one time to close the circle but he stuck to the same sophistry he used that night of the near rape. If he had any spiritual nature it didn't present itself. He became the head of the Order for awhile and was eventually sent to priest a small chapel on an Air Force base in the Southwest, away from teenage boys. Now he administers Mt. St. Francis. Thought you might find it interesting. It's been a long and winding road.
