Richard's Story
Hi, everyone,
Well, here we are..checking out memories from our past. Who would have thought...!
Here's the short version:
It seems like I never left school! (read on and you'll see why that's true)...
I graduated from Grandview Elementary (after continuing on from Solano) in 1971. I went to West High School (Phoenix), graduating in 1975. On to Arizona State...University of Southern California...back to Arizona State..then finally, Michigan State.
Thanks to Warren Slocum (Grandview's band director) visiting Solano one semester, I discovered music and never left. Starting with saxophone (alto to be exact), I later "discovered" the bassoon (didn't know what it was at the time) and that instrument became my main focus.
I continued playing saxophone and bassoon through elementary school (with a short stint on cello). By 8th grade, I was studying privately with an undergrad student from ASU (Chris Holdcraft, who charged $2 a lesson!). Private study was the key I needed to really get going on the instrument.
At West High, I hung with the music crowd, played in 5 orchestras (both school and community groups), and kept doing all things music.
Fast forward through college, I got my first teaching job at the University of Arkansas (never in my life did I think that I would be wor...Expand for more
king in that state, but you never know what is around the corner in one's life). Even with subsequent job offers from other schools, remaining at the UA has turned out to be the best situation for me (though I still find the South to be far too conservative). Luckily, Fayetteville is in a large metro area and the city itself--having a university--is fairly cosmopolitan in atmosphere.
After 23 years of academic teaching, I decided that I needed a change and moved 2 hours away to Tula, Oklahoma where I perform with the Tulsa Symphony, Ballet Orchestra, Choir Orchestra, Opera orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra. I also lead a week-long summer bassoon workshop in Tulsa. You can read about that by doing a search for Bassoon Bonanza!
Blah, blah, blah....this is way too much info. to keep spouting...who really likes to talk about themselves??? If you want to know more, go to the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra website.
I still own my parent's house (where I grew up), 2 blocks from Solano School. I used to come back to AZ quite often to play with the Flagstaff Festival (until it folded, unfortunately). I do visit Phoenix more often now. If you want to get together while I'm there, send me a message through Facebook.
I truly hope that all of you are happy and doing great in your lives.
