Richard's Story

Warm hello¿s to those who care to read this. My best memories of North High include my teachers Mr. Roche and Mr. Frank (English); Mr. Utlat (math), Mr. Long (History), Mr. Carey (Civics) , Mr. Brown (Chemistry), and Mrs. Shelley (a capella choir_ . My only consistent activity there was the choir, which I sang in forthree years. After graduating in '52, I enrolled at Arizona State College (as it was known then), where I was a bit more polished. I joined a fraternity, sang in the college choir, was on the debate team for three years, and a member of several other special interest organizations. It was a lot of fun. .,).I was ¼ of a college fraternity barbershop quartet then, and this quartet got together in 1999 again ( we still sing together occasionally). Graduated in 1956 with a B.A. in education (English major). I did a graduate year in American Studies at the University of Wyoming, but never completed a thesis. (Several years later I did get an M.Ed. at U. Wyo). I joined the Army in July of '57 and somehow reached the rank of "Buck Sergeant". Friends who knew me in high school may wonder how. I wonder how! But it was a surprisingly good growth experience, and I have never regretted those three years. I married a beautiful and talented lady in 1959. We had two wonderful children who were delightful growing up (it seemed challenging at the time), and remarkable in their adult years. My son spent some 7 or 8 years in the Army as a medic, then got his AA degree in nursing - then he went on to get a BS in information technology. My daughter attende...Expand for more
d four different universities, has a Ph.D. in soil science (microbiology), and a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree. Both are R.N.'s . They are among my closest friends and I stand in awe of them. My marriage ended after 14 years. However, my former wife and I are still friends and at crucial times have given vital support to each other. I¿ve dated but never married again. I've done a lot of things, none of them for very long, and it probably looks like I was ¿trying to decide what to do when I grew up! I never decided. I was a public school teacher (English and Journalism), education director at a boy's correctional school, curriculum development writer at a Job Corps, writer for a nursing education film company, writer of several study guides for television college courses, vocational training manager at a Job Corps Center, and a licensed insurance agent (actually, I did customer service for a national auto insurance company). . Most of my grown-up (?) years I've sung in a church choir, occasionally in a community chorus. Still love singing, have just joined another choir in San Antonio. States I¿ve lived in for more than six months: Arizona, Wyoming, New York, Alaska, South Carolina, Nebraska, California, and Texas. Places I¿ve visited: Missouri, Georgia, D.C., Colorado, Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, Saudi Arabia, France and Denmark. I'm now retired in San Antonio, living with my son and his wife. We share a nice-size home with three cats and three computers. Would deeply enjoy hearing from old friends or anyone with a question or comment.
