Richard's Story
College
I spent two years at Mission San Fernando attending the junior seminary before moving to Camarillo. There I was part of the first class to occupy the newly built college campus complex on the grounds of the theologate. Although the Second Vatical Council which made such sweeping changes in the Church got underway during my college years, we lived a very monastic life, almost completly cut off from the secular world. In addition to the spiritual life there was a strong focus on academics, very small classes with individual attention and top notch professors. The result was a first rate liberal arts education in the best tradition of John Henry Newman's "Idea of a University. I left the seminary upon graduation from college. To avoid the draft I joined the Navy, going to Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. The order and discipline of the seminary made the transition to the military a breeze so I escaped the culture shock suffered by most college boys joining the military.
