Rick's Story
After PV High (dropped out) went into the Navy so I would not be drafted into the army and end up marching around in a desert, and because I liked the ocean. So after boot camp they sent me to Kingsville Texas where I marched around in the desert. After 2 years went to Carrier, USS Tichonderoga in Hawaii. Sailed to Viet Nam and Gulf of Tonkin happened. I was in it, so got extended an additional 6 months for Viet Nam war. Worked on flight deck in Crash Crew.
After Navy, took 1 year trip around the country with a friend in a 62 corvette, like Route 66. Played in bands to make money on the way. I can't even tell what all we did, but it was a very good trip. After talking to some philosophy students in Arizona, felt ignorant so went to Harbor College to learn philosophy. Then liked science so switched to biology. Got enough units to graduate from PV and also transferred to UCLA. THere got BA in Zoology and also joined some anti-war protests. Then to USC got MS in ENvironmental ENgineering.
Went to work for Ralph M. Parson's company in Pasadena for 3 years, worked on space shuttle, then was hired by US Air Force SPa...Expand for more
ce and Missile Systems Center. Stayed there 30 years. Worked on projects all over the world. Got White House award for coming up with non-ozone depleting rockets. Liked the job a lot, until I went too high in the system and was doing less projects and more resources and personnel stuff. SO retired Jan of 2010.
For the past 11 years been dancing for exercise at first, then to get good. Won 2 tv shows and a place in J Lo's next video. Also in last 2 Michael Jackson videos. Do a lot of flash mobs too. I teach Hip Hop at Hype Studios in Torrance and sometimes Michael Jackson style. For dance started Yoga to get flexible and weights to become a buff daddy (as my son requested). Now in really good shape. I dance about 18 hours per week and exercise another 6 hours per week. BOdy fat measured 7% in January.
I have 2 kids, 22 and 26. Still live in PV (but lived in Hermosa for a while). My younger brother, Rob, died in 2001. He was a great artist and i have a lot of his art work. I plan to give it to museums, and am trying to learn the art world so I can figure out how to do that. Now working on a book of his art.
