Rick's Story

Baby boomers got everything new. I was a charter student at Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth in 1960. From there to White Rock's Semiahmoo Senior Secondary, then Courtenay's Senior Secondary and finally back to White Rock. I went to Simon Fraser University in September, 1965 as a Charter Student and soon found myself not in classes, but one of the few oddball students who created The Peak, SFU's student newspaper. For the next year I ignored classes in favour of being a newshound (Sports Editor, actually) and was bounced out in 1967 for bad marks, finding a job at a picket fence manufacturer on Annacis Island -- Clint Sheppard was also there! Fun for a year, but not that much, so I reapplied to SFU, was accepted on probation, and actually went to classes. I was still active in student politics -- hard not to be at SFU in 1968! -- and reduced my Peak writing, but English Lit now turned me on and I graduated in 1970 with an Honours First Class degree. Who knew? I immediately entered the SFU MA program and at the same time was named Entertainment Editor and rock critic at Vancouver's Georgia Straight underground newspaper... more fun as I got to interview many bands & musicians over the next two years, including Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Captain Beefheart, and many more. By 1972 the thought of being as crazy as my university profs put a damper on my enthusiasm fo...Expand for more
r Englit and I ended up leaving SFU to become a reporter, then Assistant Editor at the Richmond Review newspaper. Journalism became fairly boring in itself, and after trying out TV and freelance magazine writing I left The Review in 1978 and a colleague and I started up McGrath Dunn Advertising, a creative boutique shop. In 1982 we split and I became a partner at PD&A, The Advertising Agency, and in 1985 I started up McGrath Johnson Advertising and we sold that to Toronto's Grey Advertising in 1986. Grey beefed us up with staff and I worked there for a year as Creative Director. In 1987 I joined Pemberton Securities as their inhouse adman, and in 1989 they were bought by RBC Dominion Securities and I was moved to Toronto as VP Creative Services. Thanks to a very friendly 1990s stock market I was able to retire on Dec 31, 1999. Since then I've become an expert on the British writer J.G. Ballard (my world's largest collection of his works has been accepted by the University of BC's Rare Books Library), have pursued photography, golf and travel, and since 2013 I've published 10 books under the imprint The Terminal Press. In 2015 I published a collection of my rock star interviews 1970-1972, photographs, and various essays on pop culture. In 2004 my wife Catherine and I built an oceanfront cottage on BC's Sunshine Coast, and in 2017 we sold our home in Toronto and bought a house in Powell River, BC.
